Maybe this is better for the Politics forum but here goes:

Is anyone else bothered by the people that get on these commercials and say they owed the IRS something like $90,000 but only paid $4,000?

I hate taxes and the IRS but is it something to be proud of that you weaseled out of a debt you owed?

YES!!! I know exactly what you mean. Similar issue with the "debt relief" commercials. You ran up your credit cards, how about you pay them off, deadbeat.

Note: I have no love for neither the IRS nor credit card companies.

Those drive me CRAZY! I actually had to rewind the other night to confirm it said "the debt is most likely not your fault". Very frustrating.

structured settlement plans can also hurt just as much as a bankruptcy. They go into your credit report as a "charge off" and I can tell you from my limited experience working at a local Dodge dealership that the finance folks would much rather see a discharged bankruptcy than a bunch of charge offs.

it's also far preferrable to work with the original creditor. Collection agencies are a bunch of predatory scumbags who'll lie, intimidate and break several laws in order to get you to pay. Since the agency has already paid for the debt, whatever you pay to them does not go to your original creditor.

I'd like to understand how they are able to reduce a ninety grand tax bill to a two thousand dollar settlement. To me, someone misinterpreted what was owed or just didn't do their taxes correctly. The IRS has a history out of making examples of deadbeats. If the deadbeats hire a lawyer that gets too obnoxious, the lawyer is likely to wing up on a special audit list for a few years.

So you are telling me that I can't settle for $2,000 or $3,000 of my $120,000 credit card debt?
