Head Coach: Lane Kiffin
Former Coach:phil Fulmer

Last Seen: Coaching the Oakland Raiders
Reason to like the hire: If you’re going to compete in the SEC, you better be prepared to make a splash when a head coach is needed. Tennessee did that when it signed Kiffin. Widely considered one of the best young offensive minds in the sport, he has the right makeup and connections to be a success in the toughest league in the country. Despite being only 33, he already has head coaching experience, and his ability to attract talented players and coaches will serve him well in Knoxville.

Reason to question the hire: Sure, he looks the part of a wunderkind, but what exactly has Kiffin accomplished that makes everyone convinced he’s the next big thing? Yeah, his USC offenses were prolific, but they should have been when Matt Leinart, Reggie Bush, LenDale White, and Dwayne Jarrett are executing the plays. Oh, and in less than two years with the Oakland Raiders, he went just 5-15. In a league with heavyweights, like Urban Meyer, Nick Saban, Mark Richt, and Steve Spurrier, Kiffin could spend his first few years getting a rude education.

The Early Hunch: Leave it to the SEC to attract a coach, who comes prepackaged with a slew of storylines. Kiffin’s dad is his new defensive coordinator. His wife is a Gator. His former bosses include Pete Carroll and Al Davis. In terms of drama, he’s got the potential to be Rick New-heisel, which will fit in nicely in his new surroundings.

Another little short paragraph on Lane I found. It is about who is most under pressure this year. He got #2.

My man, you had better be good. Really good. A great family name, a brash attitude, and a next-level hot wife will get you far in this world, but in the land of the SEC, the conference of ridiculously high expectations and short tempers, wins are all that matters. How much pressure will be on Kiffin? Remember, Tennessee played in the 2007 SEC Championship game and pushed LSU, the eventual national champion, in a 21-14 loss on the way to a ten-win season. One 5-7 season later, in comes Kiffin. Just getting to bowl games isn’t enough at Tennessee for any coach, much less one who’s been ruffling as many feathers as Kiffin has. There have to be SEC championships (with an emphasis on the s on the end) and flirtations with the national title every other year or so. If nothing else, the coaching staff is in place to make it all happen (hiring Ed Orgeron was a major coup), and the talent will follow.

Kiffin has kicked some butt from day one inside the program, and he has poked the bear down in Gainesville to make daily SEC noise. Is it all a masterful mind game to show that it’s football time in Tennessee, or is he just rubbing everyone the wrong way? We’ll know on September 19th when the Vols play the defending national champion. [/FONT]

See I agree with that but all the skeptics look at his record there.

And when it comes to UT, either you love it or hate it. So all the people out there who have no love for UT are praying and hoping we fail. Especially the other SEC teams b/c they see us as a huge threat and don't want us back in the national picture again.

Where we belong!!!!

Two good articles! I really enjoyed both of them. I'm really tired however, of people using oakland to judge kiffin. I mean honestly, how long has it been since oakland was good? It would be one thing if oakland was good before Kiffin came in and they were good after he left, but the fact is that they aren't.

Seriously, people aren't that quick to bring up the 6-10 skeletons in Saban and Spurrier's closet. And those guys weren't shackled by Al Davis' meddling.

Everyone hates UT except for the fans. Example: ESPN.

I dont think ESPN cares about UT enough to hate them.
I am sure Corso and Fowler are busy thinking about a 5-7 team whos best game was a loss to LSU in a conf championship game.

Notice they fail to mention the 2005 season.
exactly. this is the kind of prognostication that does rub me the wrong way.

these are surface stories, that's it. and it's not that i think Kiffin compares favorably with any of those guys...yet. but if you're going to do the comparison..you do need to at least acknowledge that his hire wasn't a reaction based on 2008 alone, and that both spurrier and Saban flunked their NFL tests as well. Hell Saban went 6-6 in year one and lost to a school with a hyphen in their name. 1 year later he's in the Sugar bowl, and all is forgotten.

which, if Kiffin does the same thing, that'll be the case with him too, i'm sure.

but the quip about whether or not he's a flash in the pan or not being based on Sept 19 is a joke.

if you want to build up the game because of Kiffin's comments, fine, but for any reasonable football mind out there, there at least has to be some acknowledgement that Florid is better than us right now and was going to be a huge favorite, regardless of who was roaming the sidelines for us, and what they said in the off season.

it's like all the sudden there's this imaginary expectation that we're supposed to beat florida and that these comments have put that in jeopardy.

it's a ridiculous notion. but it will generate interest and create a story about a game that wouldn't have been a story otherwise.
