My cable boxes keep screwing up - I'm on my 4th one in one room and my 3rd DVR in another room. When it goes out, I have to wait a week or so for a service call or stand in line down in crackville to exchange one in person.

I finally gave up and ordered DTV. I used to have it pre-HD and was very satisfied. Hoping the HD and SD look good on my plasma.

I'm also looking forward to having Sunday Ticket back again.

Any experiences?

Love my DirecTV, hardly ever a problem, just when bad storms come through. Don't have HD, so can't help you there. You'll get the NFL network too, you may not have had it on cable. Use your interviewing technique and you might get some movie channels for free.

I made the switch about two weeks ago and couldn't be happier. I've already ordered my NFL Sunday Ticket.

I've been with DirecTV for about seven years with almost no problems. It takes some serious weather to cause a problem with the signal -- the kind of storm where you're too busy staring out the window wondering whether branches are going to fall to be worried much about the TV signal anyway. You'll love it.

Plus, when you go to a bar and want to get a game put on one of the TVs, you can just tell the guy the channel number you want instead of waiting for him to go look it up.

i love Directv. it's alot better than cable. i have had the sunday ticket for 4 years now, and honestly there is nothing better. i wish i could afford the college gameplan too, but that may be a stretch. i would never leave the house during the fall and winter on weekends.

I have directv too, and will endorse everybody else's rec. I wouldn't go back to cable if it were free.

That being said, I'm on my 3rd DVR, so I'm not sure it is a magic bullet for that problem. I think all DVRs might be prone to early deaths.

Actually, I used to have DTV pre-HD. I never had the weather problems (unless the T-storm cell was right over my house). I switched to cable because DTV was going to charge about $600 to go HD for existing customers at the time. My cable company did it free and gave me 1/2 off the bill for a year.

The concern I had was complaints that the signal is overcompressed and can appear "soft" on HD sets.

Actually, it's not my DVR per se, it's the actual cable box part of it. They keep doing software updates and my box stops working. In the last 2 or 3 months, this has happened 3 times. I'm tired of it.

I considered DirectTV and one point. The big hang up for me is not getting CSS. It's not as big of a deal as it used to be since they aren't carrying the weekly replays any more but I still like to watch when CSS broadcasts old Tennessee games.

i don't even miss CSS.

i'm not allowed to type how i really feel about comcast, but i wouldn't use their service if they paid me.

How do the costs compare typically for direct vs. cable?

In my case, I'll be getting significantly more HD channels (about double what I get now) plus all the channels I would get via cable for about $15 less a month.

My current cable bill is about $100. I get all the cable channels, all the HD non-premiums they offer and have 1 DVR and 1 premium (HBO - about 7 versions of it)

With DTV, I'll be getting all the same channels plus about 30 more HD (with more to come in the next couple months), a DVR and HBO for about $85.

i have most all the channels other than movie channels. when i dropped hbo it went to $65. i think i was paying $80 for cable at the time with hbo (4 years ago). i have 3 boxes (1 with tivo), but i don't think they offer tivo anymore. its all their own dvr's now i think.

I'm paying about the same right now with cable, but that also includes my internet. I'm not sure it is worth the change yet.

if you have an HDTV it is WELL worth making the change.

if you don't have HDTV, not really worth it.

my one regret is that i only bought the HD box and not the HD+DVR box.

i've had DTV for a little over a year now......love it. i never had css since i live in NC......but i don't think i'd miss it.......i got the sports pak and minus some weird black out rules, i get just about everything i could want....

also got the NFL ticket......

big reaons for my switch: Tons more HD, cheaper overall, more access to NFL and college sports cable didn't even offer.

things i found out i like.......the DTV website....pretty cool stuff....i can set my DVR to record from the "my channels" deal on the site, and if i need to upgrade or change out hardware, i can just go to best buy and pick it up and install it myself when it get home....no need to wait on the cable guy......

all in all, i wish i had changed when i moved in to my house 4 years ago......

my 3 months free SHO and STARZ is running out on the 20th. No real need for them anyway, other than Big Brother After Dark on SHO 2.
