Said that Wells was one of 3 OL Coaches last year with Mahoney and Debord.
Swain says if all 3 put out a bad product last year, how will now just one of them coaching alone put out a better product.

We had really poor tackle play... finally have T's healthy multiple players that can play

If the articles are accurate, most of Wells' role last season, at least the 2nd half of the season, was to work specifically with Drew Richmond, and I thought DR looked much better by the end of the season than he did at the beginning when he lost his starter position. JMO, but I think Wells will do fine.

Jones knows the seat is at least getting mildly warm. He knows it's JOL time, and this is all on him. Don't know much about Wells, but Jones has to see him as upgrade or he could have easily stayed status quo. Regardless of Swain or others, I have to think Jones is positive about this move because if it's not, it could be a CLEM...career limiting or ending move.

Your first mistake is listening to Swain.

Wells isnt going to step on the toes of the OC or OL coach to tell them they should teach different.

He makes an interesting point. Wells choice is a bit underwhelming. Needed further infusion of new blood and another top recruiter. Not sure what Wells brings other than familiarity and continuity....and given the OL performance the last couple of years, I have a hard time seeing those as positives. In any event, it's the call of the head coach. His job.

Swain is NOT the smartest man in the room.

How could anybody be impressed with this hire?

There are about a dozen or so posters on here who are never impressed with anything about Tennessee sports. Ignore them and move on. Swain really tries to stir the pot because that is the only thing he does well. Of all the bad sports show hosts, he is close the the bottom, just ahead of Will West.

Expressing a different opinion than yours is stirring thd pot and just ignore anything you disagree with? Interesting.
Be honest, their isnt much to be impressed with outside of spectaular talent that CBJ has brought in. They have provided some great moments, have been fun to watch and been good reps for the school for the most part. However, they have never played consistant fundamentally sound football for any length of time.

The good news for Wells is that it is now his job alone and he can prove the doubters wrong.
Hopefully, he coaches up what he currently has and uses his connections in middle Tenn to bring in a good recruiting haul next Feb.

Like someone said on Twitter, maybe it is addition by subtraction.Instead of three voices with three different opinions, you have one voice with one specific direction.

Maybe it was a case of too many cooks in the kitchen.

He has a decent enough resume. He's had a year to get familiar with the system. No reason to not be in wait and see mode.

Every position coach isn't going to be a home run hire.

So you're suggesting after everyone screaming for Mahoney to be fired, we should give his replacement an actual chance to do the job.. before we start complaining about him?

Well, that's just crazy enough to work.

He can have any opinion he wants, as long as he stops letting "turkey man" call in! Seriously that guy irritates me so much.

He better be the second coming of you know who because Jones has put the entire pot in on this guy. Everything that has been worked on since he got here and Jones's future as well depends on the Oline preforming this year. The entire team is built around it.

Wells has a good resume. Swain should shut up and give him a chance.

It's his job to comment on all things Vol football....shutting up doesn't fit his job description as a radio talk show host.

As far as Wells' resume, he's never coached at a P5 school before, certainly not in the SEC in charge at a vital position group like OL, so the jury is out on him to be sure.

Additionally, his reasoning is fair imo, in light of what happened last year when Jones fired Lawson and then named his immediate assistant Sjursen as his successor....it didn't work out hiring from within then and I think it's right to question it now.

All that said, you can give an honest critique while still giving him a chance, which is what Swain is doing. Here are some tweets from him about the hire......

We all hope so. Rooting him on big time

@rcjakes he's not proven yet. Nothing about EKU WKU NMST and getting fired at USF says proven. doesn't mean he won't be successful here

Falls into the retread category respectfully. Not proven like a Sam Pittman. Doesn't mean he can't be successful.

Honestly, the replacement has been a OL coach before joining as a QC coach. The OL group are older.

How could anybody be impressed with this hire?

Because..

"I love it," state championship winning and Nolensville head coach Will Hester said. "He's a relationship builder. He's the No. 1 guy on Tennessee's staff in middle Tennessee in my opinion. It's not Shoop or any of those guys. He's a relationship guy and I think he's going to do a great job. It's a feather in the cap of the Tennessee high school coaches to have Walt Wells on staff.
"

and

He's invaluable," Copley said. "Especially when you start talking mid-state and in Kentucky. My offensive line coach that I had in Kentucky, Walt coached him. He's never met a stranger. He bonds with kids and I've seen him come in our buildings and kids love him. I think it's a no-brainer. Everyone of us at the high school level have said if he ever gets that chance, he will blow it out of the water. A lot of that is tied to recruiting, but he can also coach ball. What a freaking steal for Tennessee."

and
Wells has some serious in-roads and connections with many of the best players in the state. His brother Bobby coaches defensive lineman D'Andre Litaker at Riverdale High School in Murfreesboro. His good friend, Brothers, coaches defensive lineman Brant Lawless at Nashville Christian. And one of his former players, Travis Turner, coaches Vol tight end target James Mitchell in Big Stone Gap, Virginia.
