As Tennessee prepares for its season opener Thursday night against Appalachian State, Sutton said one of the most noticeable differences in the Vols’ defense compared to last year is the depth they have developed at every position.

“We’ve built tremendous depth at each and every level where we can rotate multiple guys in and keep everybody fresh as well as still being productive out there on the field,” he said. “I think our biggest thing is just being consistent with what we do out there on the field and just the experience that we learned and growing at each level.”

The improved depth, Sutton said, will make “a big difference” in games, particularly in the fourth quarter as opponents show signs of fatigue.

Depth. What a beautiful thing. Obviously, we had the OU and UF collapses last year. But one that sticks out to me is Alabama. On our final drive we needed to go the distance (like OU and UF actually did) to pull out the win. Bama pinned it's ears back and trounced us. They looked as energetic as the 1st series. Depth is very important.

This sounds more like Coach Jones rather than a player.
