Clausen was a winner and a good QB. Of course, I would love to have another one like him

compared to what we have now....i would gladly take clausen and/or ainge in a heartbeat. honestly, the ut fanbase has been absolutely spoiled by manning.

Who cares? He won games at the University of Tennessee. Anything else is irrelevant.

He won it all on his own. It had nothing to do with several all SEC O linemen. It had nothing to do with the Dante Stallworths, Kelly Washingtons, Jason Wittens, or any other receiver. Casey Clausen single handedly won those games with his awesome competitive spirit and will to win.........Hahahahahaha. The argument that Casey Clausen is good because Crompton sucks is a horrible position to take. How about, they both suck. It just so happens that one is worse than the other.

You are going overboard saying Clausen sucked. A.J. Suggs sucked.

oh please, if you don't think clausen was a big part of the reason we won several key games during his tenure here you're kidding yourself. '01 fla, '03 fla, and '03 bama would have been losses without him, among others.

Ummm.... NO. Clausen played behind a very, very good OL. He played with better receivers than UT has now unless a couple have break out seasons. He had bricks for feet... and a barely avg arm. In short, he would have been worse than horrible if he'd been in UT's O last year.

That's potentially the most idiotic statement on these boards in a month.

Sure Clausen had his shortcomings, we all know that, but to say that he sucked is a foolish thing to say. He was a serviceable SEC QB through 4 starting seasons, and anyone who says they wouldn't take his QB play in exchange for what we had last year is kidding themselves.

Why are they morons.
Casey had a personality that rubbed some people worng therefore they didnt like him.
His record was good but there are flaws.
he never beat uga
the uf wins were against zook
the road record never included a (starting) trip to LSU

How are these flaws that different from the mighty Peyton Manning's?

Casey had a personality that rubbed some people worng therefore they didnt like him......No such issue with Manning.
he never beat uga.....Manning never beat UF
the uf wins were against zook.....Manning's wins over Bama came against teams with similar records as Zook's UF teams.
the road record never included a (starting) trip to LSU.....Manning NEVER faced LSU, and played Auburn only once.

So really it just comes down to personality, because everyone worships Manning, but kills Clausen like he was a terrible QB or something, yet their individual flaws are very similar.

Imagine Jon Crompton leading the Vols 2000-03, there is no way he does what Casey Clausen did. If we have Casey Clausen last year we win 8-9 games, we beat Auburn, UCLA, and Wyoming and I think pretty handily. I don't think UGA would have been too far out of reach either. As bad as the CLAWFENSE was last year, I can remember quite a few instances where we had guys wide open and the QB didn't make the read or quit on the play. I believe there was a play during the Auburn game where we were inside Auburn territory and Josh Briscoe or Hancock was wide open, wide open, on a deep post and Crompton didn't even see him. That would have won the game. Our QB's do not need to win the games for us next year, but they can't lose them for us either bc of mental errors. We didn't lose too many games bc of Clausens mental errors.

so if you wanted to throw some darts at him you could.
but looking back at the guy i liked him and I wish all our qbs had the heart he had.

I like the last part.......but how about Manning.
he never beat UF
the uga wins were against Jim Donnan (sp) or goff...same thing anyway
he could barely beat vandy
Bama sucked then

we can find flaws with everyone. Casey is IMO one of the top 10 qbs UT has ever had.

Can we take in to account the offensive coordinators in this discussion? I mean Casey benefitted from albeit an avg. coordinator (R. Sanders I think). Ainge benefited from Cutcliffe but Crompton was the result of Clawson's offense. Clawson didn't help Crompton or the offense out at all. Between the line changing and inconsistent running backs you could have plugged in Peyton Manning (yeah i said it) and that offense would still be bad. Still losing games to the likes of UCLA, and possible Wyoming.

If Randy Sanders were an average offensive coordinator, he'd be an offensive coordinator somewhere else right now.

Somewhere, a loony bin sits empty, and unfulfilled.
