It wasn't a State of the Program speech, but Phillip Fulmer did address a variety of topics concerning his team and his own future after Wednesday's practice, including his relationship with Athletics Director Mike Hamilton.

"Mike has been very supportive," Fulmer said. "We meet every so often to talk about different things. Obviously, (the football team) has problems that we are working through. But he's showed great confidence and we are looking to the future."

Fulmer added that the topics haven't been restricted to this season, but to next year.

"We talked about our new building that we're raising money to build," Fulmer said.

But when it came to the current climate of UT football, Fulmer did not spin his response.

"I mean, there's concern," Fulmer said. "I'm not going to sit here and (tell) you there's not. There's concern by everybody who loves Tennessee football and Tennessee athletics about where we are, and having an opportunity here to still turn the season around and so on."

As for UT high-level boosters, who often give suggestions on personnel decisions, Fulmer said there has been no drama.

"I just couldn't be more pleased with some of the friends that I have that are at the trustee level," Fulmer said. "Those folks have been really good, contrary to what you might read sometimes."

Keep telling yourself that Phil.......everything else we hear (aka, Mike Hamilton's interview released yesterday) is proving quite the opposite!

I think you might be right. I think the boosters and all are probably telling him they support him. Most are probably still holding out some small hope that he will win the majority of the rest of the games.
That will all change if he gets "croomed" this weekend.
I dont want the vols to lose any of the rest of the games. I do know what will happen if they dont though.

What else is he going to say...."I quit". C'mon, this is lip service.

I do agree that he will not give up the reigns easily.

Don't be hopeless. What do you expect Mr. Hamilton, the unnamed "boosters" and Coach Fulmer to say? This is a poker game and it is way too early for anyone to show their cards or to tip their true intentions other than we can all be pretty sure that Coach Fulmer's goal is to keep his job and Mike Hamilton's goal is to make sure the football program is in good hands.

Be patient. The season's results will ultimately reveal all.:peace:

Sounds more to me like Fulmer is in denial.

I cannot believe him. Could you imagine another high profile coach doing this? Instead of putting the focus on his team, the program or the university, he essentially name drops in an attempt to defend himself. Look at me...Ive made some bigtime friends here and they like me..so back off!

For a little while I was actually starting to feel bad for the guy just a little bit, but then I remembered that he is paid 2+ Million a year, hasnt won a damn thing in a decade and makes jackass comments like this and the 95% comment from earlier.

Fulmer has basically told the fans that 95% of us never played football, or sports and dont really understand it and he has big friends in big places. :banghead2::banghead2::banghead2:

I honestly think the boosters are not letting CPF in on the secret that he is done. In CPF's mind, it is up to him when he wants to leave and that MH and the boosters will support him no matter what. After MH's recent comments, I think they are having meetings that CPF has not been invited to, and he just doesnt have a clue.

A lot of people here are being extremist in their scenarios. You have the people who think Fulmer is here indefinitely, and you have the people who think one game is going to get Fulmer booted.

We've heard from MH that Volunteer AD policy is to allow coaches and players to play their entire season before making decisions on the future of the programs. So not one loss, is going to decide the future for Fulmer. But a series of losses, or a .500 or worse season inevitably gets Fulmer booted imo. Anything better than .500 and they may still bring it to the table to replace Fulmer.

In no way to they make a coaching change mid-season. The only likely mid-season action I could see, would be if we lose to a mixture of MSU, Wyoming, Vandy, or UK. And if we lose to one or more of these we may see action in the form of CPF resigning at the end of the season. Possibly putting out a statement with his intentions.

MH has stated that UT is not a .500 ball club. Anything 7-6, 6-6, 5-7, and we will see movement for sure. CPF will never voluntarily leave this program, he still views himself as working age, and there is no reason for him to step down. If he is to be removed its MH and Booster's decisions to get rid of him.

There is a lot of love within the organization for CPF, but that doesn't blind MH. And it definitely doesn't blind Booster's and their money. This statement is just CPF giving us his positive outlook on the situation. He isn't going to sit there and be negative and say "Well 'bob' I was looking at our situation yesterday, and I think I'm completely screwed, and can't pull this one out." Winner's and competitors don't have that mind set, he truly does think and want to be here next year, why wouldn't he?

There is a good reason (or should I say 6 million reasons) why Fulmer says it the way he does. If he quits, he does not get the buyout.

So, even if he knows it almost over (which I believe he does), he has to keep his poker face. That will require the administration to approach him to negotiate a graceful exit. My guess is that they would settle somewhere in the middle -- say around 3 million to buy him out. He then announces his retirement in a rah-rah press conference where he expresses his undying love and devotion to the university. he then rides out the redt of the season on a white horse and a nice pile of cash.

I agree with most of that, but MH also said that one scenerio he could imagine that required a midseason change is if Fulmer loses control of the team. Things could get interesting if we start seeing some dissention in the ranks.
