If you're making the hire here, who do you take? If you compare resumes, there's really not much of a difference between the two. Im not necessarily disappointed in the hire, but not excited either. I understand Sunseri is considered an elite recruiter for Saban at Bama, but so was Thompson when he came from Bama. It just upsets me that Thompson isn't going to be given a shot at DC, and im sure the current players on the team wont be very happy either. Thompson has had plenty of chances to leave, but decided to remain faithful to Tennessee, and that's even after Kiffin had left. Im not saying ive wanted Thompson all along during our search for a DC, but if it comes down to hiring Sunseri then I would much rather just promote Lance. It's different if we're hiring Sunseri as a Co-DC along side Thompson, but other than that I wont be very pleased if Sunseri is hired in as DC all together.

I wouldn't be upset with CLT getting the DC gig. I won't be upset with Sunseri getting it either. I'm not sure any of us are close enough to the situation to know the reason he has been passed over for the DC. The hiring Sunseri could all be another over exaggerated rumor for all we know.

I agree completely. Lance is getting screwed over if Sunseri is his new boss.

Excellent reply, that definitely answered my question.

That's all you need to know. You can look at any coach that has been a positional coach for a long time and ask the same question. Why wasn't Baggett ever considered to be an OC over some other positional coaches with his great resume? Fact is, coaches usually know who is more suited to be a DC. There is a reason other teams have looked into Sunseri as DC while Thompson's main opportunity was UAB HC. Not a knock on Thompson, but he may not be DC material.

Guys there is a reason CLT is not getting DC offers. Think about that. There are very intellectual coaches and great player coaches. Please do not act like you all are qualified enough to say that LT would be a better hire. It is Dooley's ass on the line. Let the guy hire who he feels is the best candidate for the job.

Sunseri's coordinator or higher positions:
Assistant Head Coach Alabama
Special Teams Coordinator at Michigan State
Special Teams Coordinator at LSU
Defensive Coordinator at Alabama A&M
Assistant Head Coach Pitt
Interim Head Coach (1 game) Pitt
Defensive Coordinator Illinois State

Lance Thompson
Defensive Coordinator at UCF
Assistant Head Coach in charge of Recruiting LSU
Defensive line coach Bama

Sunseri is 5 years older than LT.
In 2003 Sunseri's DL at the Panthers produced 32.5 sacks and produced two pro bowlers.

He produced at least one Pro Bowl defensive lineman in five of six seasons as defensive line coach. The Panthers were among the top 10 in the NFL in terms of fewest yards allowed in four of his seven seasons and made three playoff appearances.

So you think Sunseri is DC material only because he has been looked at a couple of times by other schools? This could be a hit or miss hire. He's an elite recruiter yes, but everyone knows that the main reason he landed the talent that he did was because they all wanted to play for Nick Saban.

No, I'm saying he is DC material because other coaches feel the same way while Thompson's only looks in the offseason are lower programs in Alabama. Some positional coaches are more fit to run a defense than others. In comparing the teams knocking on Sunseri's door compared to Thompson's for DC, that should give you a hint.

He's not in fact he has never been a DC before, and Lance has for three seasons. Sunseri has been a life long position coach.

Actually Sunseri has been a DC on 2 separate occasions, Illinois St. and Alabama A&M, but that's not saying much. I hope Sunseri turns out to be a homerun hire, but I just dont see much of a difference in hiring him or promoting Lance Thompson. Sunseri is a great position coach to have on staff, but in terms of running a defense at big stage school is yet to be known.

Wasn't one of the criticisms of Fulmer that he was loyal to some coaches to a fault? I am not saying that Thompson should or shouldn't be given a chance, just an observation.
