A case could be made that 41 of Sumlin's 51 wins were unimpressive. For starters, 18 of them came against putrid non-Power Five teams. Six more are added via Arkansas, who went 33-42 during the six-year stretch and never once finished above 8-5.
The remaining 17 are teams that went 8-5 or worse. Nine of those 17 finished at or below .500, and of Sumlin's 31 wins since 2014, 23 of them were over Arkansas, non-Power Five teams or opponents that finished at or below .500.
The Aggies won a few big games with Johnny Manziel, but they declined in that aspect since his departure. A&M defeated seven teams that finished in the Top 25, and only three of them have come in the past four seasons. Since 2014, A&M is one of five SEC teams to not win more than eight games (Arkansas, South Carolina, Vanderbilt, Kentucky).
So while Kevin Sumlin won a large number of games, a vast majority of them came against weak opponents.

Thanks but no thanks
I'm 100% on board with Sumlin. There are coaches I want more, but I think he's a good coach. With the right coordinators, we start competing for the East again next year!
He has beaten Saban (with Smart as DC), Mullen, and everyone else in the East. He has won more with less talent than we had this year...and recruits very well. Not to mention, remember how well he did last time he had a guy wearing #2 at QB......get it done and get it done tonight! Save our program after this dumpster fire of today!
Baloney. We are at least 3-4 years away from thinking about being a contender in the east.....and that's if everything falls our way with coaching and recruiting. Lots of holes on this roster and frankly, I think the talent is vastly over rated.
What does Fulmer's record look like when examined in that light?
Time to be real.....would be best for us and we win immediately. Name one coach in the east he hasnt or cant beat?!?
Great question. I took a few minutes to look. I think on average he played 4 ranked teams a year generally and on average beat 2 of them. The year before he was fired, UT played 6 ranked teams and beat 3.
It seems like any really good football team would beat 7 or 8 unranked opponents a year, so I don't really know how you can blame anybody for that. There must be a better way to compare coaches than that.
Sumlin, like Butch also had issues developing his players.
What is this disturbing trend on volnation of people wanting UT to hire fired coaches?
Sumlin, Miles, Strong. I dont get it.
There's a reason they were fired, they were not meeting expectations, i can promise you they will not meet our expectations as vol fans.
Couldn't be more wrong. With a healthy roster and competent Coaching staff we easily could be contending for the East next year. GA is about to take a huge step back next season with all they will be losing and will get another @$$ beating to Auburn this weekend. Ridiculous statement saying we are 3-4 years away.
