There was a post before the Virginia Tech game referencing the number 17 to an omen. Here's a thought... 1997 we switched to Adidas, 1998 we won the National Championship. 2015 we switched (back) to Nike, 2016..... Maybe the Georgia Hail Mary was our Clint Stoerner fumble. Go ahead, destroy me VolNation!

Not overhyping. I'm a realist. Just throwing out a goofy omen. My co-worker is a A&M grad and we'll be watching together, Thanks though

eh, i think it's reaching, at least right now. that said, as you look back on most national championship teams, there's always a game or two that you look back and say "holy cow, if that hadn't happened..." our 98 season was riddle with gems like that.

97 nebraska had the funky pass break up, that wound up being kicked in the air in the air, and intercepted to seal a win against Mizzou...

01 Miami had that ridiculous 92 yard fumble recovery return for a TD against BC

those are just the ones i recall off the top of my head, i'm sure there's plenty of others. point being, it's the sum of the parts that equal the result. i don't think anyone looks at those plays as "the reason" we/they won the national title, just part of the journey to get there.

so, sure, we could look back at these last few games one day and reminisce and wax poetic about the miracles that led to....well, i won't finish that part.

Nicely put. That was my goal. Thanks for reading the title and realizing I wasn't being serious!

Why do people seem to consider great plays like the Stoener fumble and the Georgia hail mary luck? That baffles me. Its not luck.

Hail Mary was definitely NOT luck. Josh simply threw the ball in perfect position for Jennings and Jennings caught the ball at the highest point and brought it down and secured. It wasn't some insane lucky tipped pass or anything. Just awesome football

Nike. Hence the (back) in the OP

No it was Sports Bell or something like that, Nike may have been the cleats and wristbands and stuff like that.

Statistically Hail Marys are extremely lucky to actually complete. It's in the very name of the type of play! It's a prayer when the situation is as bleak as it can be. Having a .23% chance to do anything is terrible odds. Im not saying that our players werent well prepared for the play or that our players didn't contribute to its success but statistically speaking it IS extremely lucky to pull off what many well prepared teams do not pull off all the time. You are confusing lucky with a fluke play. Fluke plays are almost indescribable and have almost nothing to do with the players contributing to the outcome. Lucky just simple means the odds in pulling of an act or play.

Completed Hail Marys are by definition lucky.

Who was before that?

Probably something generic. Shoe brands didn't control the whole college game until the 90's I believe. I may be wrong. Even when we were Nike until 1997 I think it was shoes and sideline wear, not the uniforms. Never saw Peyton with a swoosh on his uniforms. There was a logo on the sleeves, but not Nike

Sure it's reaching. A lot. But that's what we as fans do. And remember folks, most all championship seasons have at least one magical, unbelievable moment. Maybe the next one will be when the boys put together a complete game this weekend.

So far, so good....

That's the logo I remember. The coach's sideline gear was Nike with the swoosh. I had plenty of that! Had a nice Nike UT wind suit and after a break up in 1997 I let the girl keep it. She thought I was being nice but, "Nah, they wear Adidas now!" :)
