30 years ago this year was the first time I stepped into that degusting dumpster cesspool. Faxgate. Little known tidbit; Sells took his Kinko's lawsuit settlement money and opened a very successful recruiting firm in Nashville. The student section was behind visiting Alumni. They gave out half time passes to go to the bars and get juiced up for second half. Student threw whiskey bottle and hit coaches wife in head. Urin cups . etc . It was bad. Most happened just a few rows away from Dad and me. Attended. 91, 93, 95, 95, 01, 03 , 05, 07 11, 13, 15, 17, 19 Will not be making the trip this year.
2001 was one of my all time happiest in person attended events.

Faxgate
Before Spygate, there was Faxgate. Jack Sells, a former Tennessee assistant who was fired in 1991 for what Tennessee said was NCAA recruiting violations, was caught faxing part of Tennessee's playbook to then-Florida defensive coordinator Ron Zook the week of the game. Sells and Zook were friends from when Zook coached at Tennessee in the 1980s. Sells sent the diagrams from a Kinko's near campus, and one of the employees recognized him and alerted the Tennessee football office. Zook initially denied receiving anything, and both sides have downplayed it. In fact, some at Florida have claimed Tennessee also had a copy of its playbook. The Gators wound up winning 35-18, and Sells wound up suing Kinko's for violating his privacy and destroying his career. In that suit, he said he was harassed by Tennessee fans and was even punched in the mouth by a fan in a Chattanooga bar. After the suit was settled years later, Steve Spurrier joked, "I guess Jack's got him a brand-new house somewhere."

I've been to many games there and never had an issue. The 91 game was unlike anything I had ever seen before at a game. It was nuts.

OP, I believe back in the 2000’s when Zook was coach, Fulmer actually stated Tennesse had their playbook.

I've been to about 40 games there and never once seen anything like what people claim happened (usually to their cousin's friend's neighbor). In fact I've seen nothing but friendly high fives and congratulations to teams that won and plenty of hospitality in the pregame parties.

For me, 1995 was the best.

When Lawrence Wright laid out Joey Kent, the place exploded. And after nearly every "loudest ever" moments in the Swamp, disaster quickly followed. Spurrier tried to go for the jugular and went deep, but Wuerffel was sacked and fumbled and Tennessee ran it back for 6.

In the 2nd half, besides getting to see the onslaught, we students were treated to a wet t-shirt contest in the 4th quarter when the rain came coming down.

Good times.

In 1991, the stories are real. No one ever includes the context of what happened when Florida went to Knoxville in 1990 and the student murder situation in Gainesville.

Yep, word got back on campus about the “our students don’t die” chant in 1990, and our students were less than hospitable in 1991.

I’ll believe just about any story a UT fan shares about their experience in 1991. Our students were out of control that night.

Ok, thanks for the context.

Doesn't justify it of course but that's pretty rotten leading up to it.

Having said all of this....

I was not there, but there were several reports for how loud the crowd was against Alabama last week.

But, IMO, that era of a crowd and the epic noise levels people talk about is over. If you weren't in Gainesville in the 90's when Florida was hosting Tennessee or Florida State, you missed it. And I get the sense that is true nationally all over the country.

Most of the time, the stadium isn't full anymore in a lot of places. And there are a lot of people that buy tickets for business or status or whatever. Back at that time, people really went to the game in order to attempt to effect the outcome of the game. Students would get tanked, but would be in the stadium for pre-game. Now, you're lucky if the student section has completely filled in by the end of the 1st quarter.

For those who talk about "the Swamp" in terms most are mentioning.....those days are long gone.

On a side note, I was there in 1985 when they played Tennessee with the astroturf as a kid.

My parents had season tickets and I was excited because it was the first game I got to go to where Florida wasn't playing a directional school.

If you weren't there when Florida had atroturf and games kicked off at 1PM, you don't know what hot is.

A good friend has been in every stadium in the SEC (prior to Misso and TAM) and his opinion is the swamp is worst toward Vol fans.
