Take a look at what Bama and a few other elite teams bring to stop the run.

1st level (Line of scrimmage)
Ohio State 1,117 lbs
Clemson 1,165
Bama 1,422 (3-4 scheme 5 mn frnt)
Tenn 1,134

Our Dline has comparable size

But lets look at next level run support
Ohio State 707
Clemson 675
Bama 683 (w Harrison )
Tenn 631 (w Gaulden)

Now to focus on Bama vs TN

Bama had 1'422 lbs of mass at the line of scrimmage before ANYTHING even happens. Its all muscle and speed.
Run support they bring 681 more pounds. Because Harrison can cover ground in a hurry and Eddie Jackson is ballhawk who can cover deep.
So Bama has a total of 2,103 lbs to stop the run !! AND still defen the pass.

Tenn with 4 men is 1'134
LBs plus Gaulden is 631
For a total of 1,765 lbs...

Bama has 338 more pounds to stop the run.

This is only part of it. But it's a significant part.

One more thing... 4-2-5 is a "speed" defense right?
Whos defense was faster yesterday??
Recruiting matters but coaching (scheme) matter just as much.

You're comparing the weight of their 4-3 personnel to our 4-2 personnel.

Compare their nickel to ours.

And our issue stopping the run is injuries, not size

You claim that coaching and scheme matter as much as recruiting, yet you are using the two teams that have set atop the recruiting world for the last 6-7 years.

Recruit the best of the best and way more often than not, you will be the best. Pretty simple.

Its combination of injuries AND Scheme. How many rushing yards did Bama have against us last year?

Their nickel? They don't run nickel so why would I do that? Im talking about what Both ACTUALLY brought to the table yesterday.

Again thats only part of it. That is one thing i mentioned. Just one.

Look at the size and skill they brought to stop the run vs what we brought to stop the run.

And part of getting that size/speed in the right place is coaching... it's everything actually .

Tennessee has recruited well. But can we really compare talent development between the the two schools?
They recruit a big MLb and make him faster. We recruit a big backer and make him a DE. Which is fine, but jusy know that Bama is not sacrificing speed or skill for size. And that's recruiting AND development (scheme,coaching)

And their backups are just as good. :)

I accept that football is about winning your one-on-one matchups. I also expect coaches to find the mismatches that serve our advantage and put our guys in position to exploit those edges. The only concern I have is where the hell do we find the mismatches to begin with?

We are 115th of 128 FBS schools against the run right now.

Schools above us include UTEP, New Mexico State, and UMass.

This goes far beyond an injury to key personnel.

Is anyone really thinking we are SEC championship worthy? Really?

U do understand that utep, New mexico state and umass havent played anything close to our schedule, right? Kinda hard to compare...

So you are comparing their 3-4 defense to our 4-2 and after all that number crunching your grand conclusion is that they are about one man heavier than we are, which would make sense if they have 7 in the box and we have 6. Am I missing something?

On many occasions I watched the QB handoff to the running back and actually run ahead of beside the play as a lead blocker. I also notice he very seldom really blocked, he more or less would just screen our defenders from getting to the ball carrier. Now my question. Since he (the QB) was in a lead blocker mode why did our defenders not knock him on his butt? Not one time did we "Knock him on his A**" It would have been a great opportunity to rattle him and possibly knock him out of the game. I don't get it.

1. Our base personnel is nickel and was nickel last year too

2. You're claiming they don't run nickel? Bs. Almost everytime bases out of nickel and runs more nickel than anything else.

If I recall, you're a coach so know, you know something about football. This post is more of a catchall to various comments.

UA may switch back and forth, but I think their primary scheme is 3-4, which provides a lot of potential / help to stop the run and intermediate passes.

It takes time and recruiting to run the 3-4...last time our VOLS tried it, it was disatrous.

Size does matter, but speed does too. What we saw yesterday was a pretty flawless D; both scheme and talent....with no key injuries to boot. Even their backups are excellent and would probably start at just about every school in the country.

He's completely not getting the fact, they don't run nickel because their CBs can man up and they have two inside backers that can run and cover while the line pin their ears pack with 5 or 6 and shut down any chance of forward momentum.

He just completely ignored the purpose of the post.

Like who gives a crap what their nickel looks like compared to ours? Not the point at all...

How did they stop our ground game and collapse our pocket? And every other teams pocket? They lead the nation with 27 sacks and have the top run defense.

We're 105 in run defense for a reason.
- Kelly and Abernathy are not coming up in run support like they should. The edge is always open because of that.
- Jumper is a 224 lb walk on and we're asking to plug the middle with another 220lb guy.

And Gaulden has to play coverage.

Which usually leaves 6 men to try and stop 7 or 8 (QB run).

When we were "fresh" 1st game we couldn't penetrate or stop the run. Absolutely nothing is right about this team right now which comes back to coaching. We've had our best Guard sitting the bench in hopes of red shirting, only using the scat back when we have to, receivers halfass block on plays. Did you notice Bama receivers pushing our DB's all the way down the field on run plays? Our coaching staff is WAC/MAC/Big East level coaches plain and simple

20-30% of the time Alabama plays their "base" personnel. The rest is nickel or dime.
