Stoops/Richt vs Callahan/Weis

He's got a huge arm and can make all the throws.

He just lacks it between the ears.

He reminds me of Jamarcus Russell.

Strange that everyone says this even though he calls the plays at the line of scrimmage. If the coaches trust him to get into the right plays then I would say that he is pretty good at reading and reacting to the defense.

Why does he throw so many INTs?

I don't think that means he can't read a defense. Matt Ryan threw a bunch of picks last year and he has played great this year. I think it just means he puts too much trust into his arm strength right now which is correctable.

It hasn't been corrected in 3 years.

When he spooned his back-up in the Talladega infield, it raised questions about how smart he was. His play on the field only backs up what I think.

Point is that some of us, myself included, get caught up in the "name" of our next coach rather than honestly evaluating ALL candidates for the core qualities that most agree are necessary to be a successful HC..... leadership, work ethic, enthusiam, knowledge, experience(s), and a tremendous desire to succeed (ala BP)!

I don't remember lots of "excitement" in Norman, OK and Athens, Ga over the hirings of Stoops and Richt.... Both of whome were given an "opportunity" to show what many others already knew or predicted.... Yet we still heard the same arguments: "But can Richt recruit?", "Well he's coaching FSU's players!", "But can Stoops recruit?", etc.

Then there was Lincoln, NE and South Bend, IN..... I certainly remember lots of excitement and hoopla coming from those camps!

Therefore, I have looked at myself in the mirror and decided that it's time to re-evaluate my HC "list"..... This new list will now INCLUDE candidates I previously discounted for not being "flashy" enough!

I decided to place candidates into two categories.... Stoops/Richt and Callahan/Weis. I am not predicting what I feel each candidate would become, I am just trying to compare the names we've all been discussing to the situations previously described with the 4 mentioned above......

Stoops/Richt (very little fanfare):
Muschamp, Strong, Kelly, Brewster, Patterson, Peterson, etc

Callahan/Weis (excitement and/or name recognition):
Davis, Leach, Kiffin, Gruden, Smith, Cowher, etc

Who am I to predict..... I would support any of the above. But I must ask, is the "name" and/or "HC experience" really more important than core qualities such as enthusiam, desire, pedigree, etc?

Thanks for reading.

Great point.
