Bennett’s grandpa was a coach for Bill Battle. His bandits still hold the SEC INT record while at UT.

His late Grandfather Buddy Bennett was a running QB at South Carolina in 1958-1960..He later went into Coaching and was the DB Coach at ETSU in 68-69.. In 68 his team picked off 24 passes and topped that in 69 with 37 INT's, culminating in a Div2. Natty over La. Tech while intercepting some guy named Terry Bradshaw 3 times.

In 1970 he was hired as Coach Bill Battle's first DB Coach at UT..That year the Vols went 11-1 and were ranked #4 while winning the Sugar Bowl and becoming one of UT's best ever teams..They had 36 INT's, an SEC record which still stands..They faced some pretty good QB's in Chuck Hixson from SMU, Heisman Winner Pat Sullivan from AU, Scott Hunter from Bama and John reaves from UF....They intercepted Bama 8 times in a 24-0 win which prompted one of Hunter's receivers to say, "Try to throw it to them and see if I can Intercept it"

Buddy left after that year to be the DC at Arky..He also had Coaching stints at Ga. Tech, USC and Va. Tech..His DB's were known as "Bennett's Bandits" for their INT success..

Any action on how many times/how early Tim Priest mentions his old DB coach?

This is a game that we actually have the better QB in!

Pressure
Knock him down
Move him off his spots.
Quick decisions

We can create turnovers. This isnt David Fkn Greene.
I’m not sure on some of this. Obviously, an onslaught of pressure eventually rattles any QB but our D line isn’t great at getting pressure. This kid is smart and can move well. However, he is inexperienced so maybe we can fool him a few times. He’s small so I almost think we’re better keeping him in the pocket and making our linemen get their hands up. They should be able to tip some balls with a listed 5’11” QB. If we let him break contain he might cause more trouble from the little I’ve seen of him. I wouldn’t call him a running QB by any stretch but he’s sneaky quick and will take what we give him. He seems to throw well on the move and it has to be easier for him to see outside of the pocket.

Was at that 24-0 game. What a great feeling it was. The next morning not so much... after a night partying.

The bama receiver's quote ranks way up there in college sports satire. I'll bet even Jerry Tark would laugh (his NCAA Cleveland State tidbit is also a big fav)

Pruitt will create pressures,
No doubt Bennett knows the pressure of this game.
Its a system at Georgia, It always has been. Other than maybe the Shockley days from years past.
If Tennessee can do enough to make him move off his spots and "second guess" some throws it will go a long way in getting a W

We need to be +2 or better and score into the 20s, probably mid to upper 20s. That’ll be a tall task for this team but we’ve gone from 0 chance to at least some chance in a short time. I’d put our chances at 25%. I know many on here are well over that but, realistically, UGA is the better team. We would beat them about 1 out of every 4 or 5 games though. Today just needs to be the 1!

It was the 1969 Grantland Rice bowl. Best I remember the bucs also sacked Bradshaw 12 times.

A large portion off that ETSU team was make up of guys I played with from Kingsport Dobyns Bennet HS. And the coach was my mothers 1st cousin. I went to UT and watched the La Tch game from Murrell hall. It was like family beating up on old Terry Bradshaw.

Thank you for posting this...brings back memories. IMO the UT 1970 defensive backfield was the best ever in the history of college football. 36 Interceptions. Buddy Bennett was an amazing DB coach, as were the defensive backs: David Allen, Tim Priest, Bobby Majors and Conrad Graham.
