I track basketball statistics; thought this might be of interest to other UT Bball fans. Based upon last year's stats of ONLY RETURNING PLAYERS- team averages according to number of minutes played:
(transfers, early exits and seniors excluded to the best of my knowledge)
team points & rebounds per minute (pct of minutes returning)
UT 2.18 0.85
BAMA 1.78 0.82
ARK 1.77 0.80
AUB 1.82 0.82
FLOR 1.68 0.76
GEO 1.88 0.94
KY 1.79 0.70
LSU 1.72 0.68
Old Mess 1.47 1.05
MSU 2.12 0.97
SC 1.39 0.72
VU 1.72 0.77

Those stats are pointless. Who cares if you score 2 points per minutes played if you gave up 3 or 4 points per minute played? The more relevant stat would be points scored per minute less points allowed per minute.

Jeez, tough crowd. Some of us actually appreciate the insight.

I agree. These stats are meaningless. Florida was the National and SEC champion and they are a good deal below the vols according to these stats. These stats don't reflect the successfulness of the team.

Did you miss the part about those stats being for returning players? In case you missed it, Horford, Noah, Brewer, Green, and Humphrey will not be back in Gainesville this season.

Yes I did miss that part. I thought the stats were for last years team and the percent showed how much of that team would be returning.

The Vols will be favored to win the east. Thats obvious with Florida losing almost every significant contributor from last year. The Gators did have the number 1 ranked recruiting class in the nation though so they will probably be good by the time the conference season rolls around.

The Vols still lack a dominant center inside and a big athletic small forward. Lofton being such a terrific shooter helps to offset these deficiencies, but you can't compete with teams like North Carolina, Kansas, or any of top teams without better players at those positions.

That's true, but with the Vols style you just can't get some big center, you have to get someone that will fit in with our offense.

Trust me, if Pearl could get a guy like Oden, he'd take him and mold the offense. You play whatever way your personal allow you to play that gives you the best chance of winning.

Who wouldn't?

It's not everyday you find a beast like Oden.

The Vols were a solid team last year that could score like crazy, but they weren't an elite team because they lacked the elite players. Florida had Brewer at the SF and Noah and Horford up front. The vols had Bradshaw who played hard but was nothing compared to having a guy like Brewer at the wing.
It seems that Lofton is the only elite college player on the team. Not good enough to beat the best teams.

You mean an elite team like the Florida group they beat 3 of the last 4 times they played them? Like the Memphis team they blew out last year?

Once again, I agree with you, but if we can control tempo and run up and down the court we won't get abused as badly down low. Last year, when Florida wanted to slow the game down they would just lob it to Noah, Horford, or Richard down low and we couldn't stop them, but if we run up and down the court then our post players are quicker than the opponets.

I understand what you are saying there, but the two wins in 06 were last second wins and the win last year was after the Gators had clinched the SEC. The Gators also lost to a lousy LSU team and Vandy. Head to head wins don't me nearly as much in basketball as they do in football. Florida won back to back national championships but the Vols beat them 3 out of 4. Now you can spin that anyway you want, but who in the hell is going to believe that Tennessee was even close to as good as the Gators were?

Who won the SEC East in '05-'06?

On 3 of the 4 games they were way better than the Gators.

Looks great on paper I agree. But you can't take everything from the recruiting rankings. Lofton was only a 3 star and he's obviously the best player of all those listed

Maybe you should give these guys a chance since none of them have played for more than 1 year under Pearl.
