Starting QB Discussion (merged)

Should be Stephens or Coleman so next year we will have someone with game experience!

Hopefully CLK will be able to orchestrate enough blow outs this year to allow the 2nd and 3rd string QB's to get some quality game experience.

Since Fulmer liked to sit on 10 point leads so much, backups rarely got to play. I belive this will not be the case under the Kiffin regime. I believe he will step on their throats once they are down.

Crompton played most of last year, started a couple of games the year before, has been around for years: He should be proficient by now--dependably SOLID, at the LEAST. I haven't seen him this year, but I doubt he can be called that yet. I wouldn't start him unless he was /demonstrably/ better than the other two. I think Kiffin & the staff do have to think about next year, too. If the offense is going to muddle through this year, better to do it with a younger QB. If Crompton gets the nod in the fall, I would hope and expect that he'd be on a short leash...

This may sound stupid, but at DB (too many to name), WLB (Thompson, Frazier), and MLB Lathers, Reveiz), I don't think there is a HUGE difference between the 1st and 2nd strings. Don't get me wrong, I know the 1st string D is alot better, but right now I think that is mostly because of Walker (unblockable) and Ben Martin. They are wreaking havoc on Crompton. But when you look at the 7 players who mostly cover the passes (besides McCoy-Donald at SLB), it isn't a big difference. I mean, if Berry and Vinson were out there, I could see why everybody would be making a big deal with the 1st and 2nd string thing. It's just not that big to me without those 2 on the field...

And I'm not sure about this, but I'm assuming that BJ gets the 2nd team offense with him as well? Judging by how good the 1st string offensive line is, I'm just gonna assume that the 2nd string offensive line isn't too solid. BJ doesn't get to throw to Gerald Jones either...

Last year during the O and W game how many qbs played? Wasnt it like 5? I think a few walkons played qb. Please tell me only the 3 (jc, bj, nick) will play qb in the O and W.

hard to judge just by numbers . JC is playing against the 1st D ...which was one of the best in the country last season and is now coached by one of the best DC's to ever coach in the NFL . By all accounts the D is gonna be all that and a bag of chips .

This isn't the same D as last year. They are a few key pieces missing: Wes Brown, Berry, and Vinson haven't even scrimmaged. Elix Wilson, Demonte Bolden, Walter Fisher, Nevin McKenzie, Demetrice Morley, Robert Ayers, Adam Myers-White, and DeAngelo Willingham are all gone. That means we have replaced starters at DT, DE, 2 at LB, both CBs and both Safetys. Dan Williams and Rico McCoy are the only 2 starters from last year's defense that are running with the 1st string defense as of now...

I think it is unfair to judge Crompton at this point , based on last season . Here is why :

Crompton was a back up QB until last season . He came into the Clawfence ...which effectivly took an O line that had 4 sacks the year before and netted them 25 , helped a 1000 yard receiver and running back disappear with a resounding ' poof ' . If you read between the lines of all these player articles it is clear that last season the O line did not know who to block , the receivers did not know where to go , and the QB who had less than 2 seconds to make a decision did not know where to throw .

If any one has every played QB , when you have 2 seconds and receivers are not going where you think they should go , you are going to make more inaccurate throws . You begin a throw , and change your mind mid throw . Ball into the dirt , into the stands , into the D .
It would be very hard for a young guy to gain confidence and maintain fluid mechanics . Any QB woulda had problems in that situation ( see BJ and Stephens )

Are folks really gonna judge him in the spring , when he is facing a very successful defense from last season coached by Monte Kiffin ? Defenses are almost always ahead of offenses in the spring ...and sometimes a few games into the season !

I think back on the change in Ainge from Sanders to Cutcliffe . I expect that in this situation .
