None of the old books are canon any more.

Although the current Marvel Comics series are. For instance, the recent C3p0 special explained how he got the red arm.

I'd read the Thrawn trilogy by Timothy Zahn. Not canon but probably the best SW series out there.

I read the Aftermath book that came out before Episode 7 and it was terrible.

Lords of the Sith is official canon and its really, really good. Tarkin is a great read too. Also canon.

Read the Thrawn Trilogy even though it's no longer Canon, it's just that good.

Must read is the Darth Bane trilogy. To me it's the best starting point because it tells you why there is a rule of two and is a great history of the Sith.

Judging from that list it looks like nothing g published before 2014 is considered canon.

And as I said before, all of the current Marvel series are considered canon as well.

Like another poster said, the Darth Bane trilogy is the best I've read (about 20 so far). Lords of the Sith, Darth Revan, and Into the Void are my other favorites.
