Wow I was super hyped when I first saw this on Twitter but then I read the article! :bad:

IMO, If this is a success it could mean the beginning of the end for new network series.

New 'Star Trek' TV Series a Go at CBS All Access

New 'Star Trek' TV Series a Go at CBS All Access

Just in time for its 50th anniversary, Star Trek is returning to the small screen.

Prolific producer Alex Kurtzman is developing a new take on the beloved sci-fi classic for TV, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. The new Star Trek has been picked up straight to series at CBS, with the premiere slated for the network in January 2017. Subsequent episodes will air on its digital and VOD platform, CBS All Access. The premiere and all subsequent episodes will then be available in the U.S. on CBS All Access, the networks digital subscription video on demand and live streaming service. Star Trek marks the first original series developed specifically for CBS All Access.

The new Star Trek will introduce new characters seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations, while exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its inception in 1966.

The cross-platform streaming service, which hosts thousands of episodes from CBS' roster (both past and present) is available for $5.99 per month. Included in the fee is the ability to stream the local network live. All previous Star Trek series are currently available on CBS All Access. CBS Studios International will distribute the series for TV and multiple platforms around the world.

The drama is set up at CBS Television Studios and Kurtzman's Secret Hideout banner. Kurtzman and development head Heather Kadin will exec produce. A search is under way for a writer to take on the cult hit. The franchise is poised to celebrate its 50th anniversary as the original series debuted Sept. 8, 1966.

The new Star Trek TV series continues Kurtzman's relationship with the beloved franchise. He produced the Star Trek feature film series, co-writing 2013's Star Trek Into Darkness and 2009's franchise revival. The fourth in the franchise set for 2019, though Kurtzman is not attached.

CBS TV Studios distributed the original series, which was produced by Paramount Television and Desilu Productions. Created by Gene Roddenberry and starring William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy, the series ran for three seasons and 79 episodes from 1966-67 on NBC and became a monster hit via syndication. It spawned an animated series (1973-74), a series of feature films starting in 1979 and four TV follow-ups including The Next Generation (1987-1994), Deep Space Nine (1993-99), Voyager (1995-2001) and Enterprise (2001-05).

News of a new Star Trek TV series comes as the franchise has been mired in rights issues between CBS and Paramount after Viacom merged with CBS in 2000. CBS Corp. absorbed Paramount for television, while Paramount Studios the company that distributed the films went to Viacom.

The Star Trek revival comes as reboots and follow-ups continue to be in high demand on broadcast (and cable/streaming). Kurtzman and frequent partner Roberto Orci, who is not attached to CBSTVS' Star Trek is behind CBS' follow-up to Bradley Cooper's Limitless and also exec produces the network's veteran Hawaii Five-0 reboot. The K/O banner currently has four shows on the air Hawaii, Limitless and sophomore drama Scorpion as well as Fox's Sleepy Hollow. K/O is repped by CAA and Gendler Kelly.

"This new series will premiere to the national CBS audience, then boldly go where no first-run Star Trek series has gone before directly to its millions of fans through CBS All Access, said Marc DeBevoise, executive vp and GM at CBS Digital Media. Weve experienced terrific growth for CBS All Access, expanding the service across affiliates and devices in a very short time. We now have an incredible opportunity to accelerate this growth with the iconic Star Trek, and its devoted and passionate fan base, as our first original series.

So does this mean it won't have the normal CBS-wide audience appeal? More like a premium channel quality production?

I hope so. Most network shows are so dumbed down I can hardly watch them.

For instance, I like The Flash but is corn ball as can be. Where as Daredevil felt more like an extended movie.

‘Star Trek’: Rod Roddenberry & Trevor Roth Join CBS Digital Series As EPs

‘Star Trek’: Rod Roddenberry & Trevor Roth Join CBS Digital Series As EPs

CBS’ upcoming new Star Trek series has recruited Federation royalty into the production as Roddenberry Entertainment President Eugene “Rod” Roddenberry, son Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry, has joined the series as an executive producer along with Roddenberry Entertainment COO Trevor Roth. They join Alex Kurtzman, Heather Kadin and Bryan Fuller, who was previously announced as the new series showrunner. Roddenberry Entertainment will also co-produce alongside CBS Television Studios, Secret Hideout and Living Dead Guy Productions.

“Gene Roddenberry, the Great Bird of the Galaxy, left a finely feathered nest for all who love ‘Star Trek’ to enjoy,” said Fuller in a statement. “And it is only fitting that Rod Roddenberry and Roddenberry Entertainment join our new Trek adventure to ensure that his father’s legacy of hope for the future and infinite diversity in infinite combinations runs through our tales as Gene Roddenberry intended.”

“Moral dilemmas, human issues, complex characters and a genuine sense of optimism: These are the cornerstones of Star Trek and are what have made it such an influential and beloved franchise for the last 50 years,” said Rod in a statement. “While I will always be humbled by its legacy and the legions of fans who are its guardians, it’s a genuine honor to be joining a team of imaginative and incredibly capable individuals whose endeavor it is to uphold the tenets of Star Trek’s legacy while bringing it to audiences in a new era and on a contemporary platform.”

That mission to continue Gene Roddenberry’s legacy – viewers will of course determine if it will be a five year mission – has been all over recent Star Trek hirings. Last week it was announced that Nicholas Meyer, director of Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, has joined the new series as an exec producer and writer.

While plot and setting details have not been revealed at this time, the new Star Trek series will be unrelated to Paramount’s reboot film franchise, the next installment of which, Star Trek Beyond, is directed by Justin Lin and set to hit theaters in summer 2016. Star Trek will premiere in January 2017 with a preview broadcast on CBS followed by an exclusive run in the U.S. on CBS All Access. The series will be distributed concurrently on multiple platforms worldwide by CBS Studios International.

‘Star Trek’ TV Series: Nicholas Meyer Joins As Writer

‘Star Trek’ TV Series: Nicholas Meyer Joins As Writer

Nicholas Meyer, one of the people credited with saving the Star Trek franchise after the underwhelming first movie, has been recruited as a writer and executive producer on new CBS Star Trek series, slated to launch in 2017. He will work with executive producer/showrunner Bryan Fuller.

“Nicholas Meyer chased Kirk and Khan ’round the Mutara Nebula and ’round Genesis’ flames, he saved the whales with the Enterprise and its crew, and waged war and peace between Klingons and the Federation,” Fuller said. “We are thrilled to announce that one of Star Trek’s greatest storytellers will be boldly returning as Nicholas Meyer beams aboard the new Trek writing staff.”

Created by Alex Kurtzman and Fuller, the series will premiere in January 2017 with a preview broadcast on CBS followed by an exclusive run in the U.S. on CBS All Access.

The new Star Trek series will run concurrently with the feature franchise. The show is not related to the upcoming installment Star Trek Beyond, which is scheduled to be distributed by Paramount Pictures in summer 2016.

Star Trek will be produced by CBS Television Studios in association with Kurtzman’s Secret Hideout. Kurtzman, Fuller and Heather Kadin will serve as executive producers. CBS Studios International will distribute the series concurrently for television and multiple platforms worldwide.

Meyer directed the second Star Trek movie, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and also co-wrote the fourth and the sixth movies in the franchise, the latter of which he also directed.

Still going to fail horribly since it's not on mainstream TV. I know I'm not going to get CBS All-Access just to watch it.

Yeah.... Ill be looking for alternative viewing access for this.

CBS just doesn't have the quality of shows to justify paying $7-10/month like Netflix of HBO Now.

The other side of that coin is they'd produce it and show it on CBS only to cancel it after it's first season anyway. It's a lose lose with the big networks anymore.

This is going to be a failure of epic proportions. Can't wait to watch this unfold and this is coming from a die-hard sci-fi fan.

It all depends on how well written the show will be, imo. Would you drop $6 for access to another show like Breaking Bad? Or Game of Thrones?

I think not being on the mainstream is a plus these days

It's going to be on Netflix international 24 hrs after each episode airs. You can use a region blocker like HotSpot Sheild and watch it that way.
