Happy 83rd birthday, Gus

Happy birthday to UT legend Gus Manning, who along with his longtime sidekick Haywood Harris, was inducted into the Tennessee Sports Writers Hall of Fame.

Gus is a still-spry 83. You can count the number of Vols football games he has missed since 1951 on one finger.

Two aces in one year

We knew John Ward had the pipes, as the beloved Voice of the Vols proved for decades. We didn't know he had game.

Ward recently had his second hole-in-one this year. Playing at Alcoa's Green Meadows GC, he aced No. 8, a 110-yard par-3. Ward used a sand wedge.

Tennessee's Phillip Fulmer and Vanderbilt's Bobby Johnson will preview their teams at the Nashville Sports Council's Comcast College Football Kickoff luncheon at the Wildhorse on Tuesday. Call 743-3120 for info.

Johnson will tell you how excited his team is to play road games against Michigan and Alabama to open the season.

It reminds me of the year Watson Brown took Vanderbilt to Mississippi State to open a season. They literally didn't have enough crutches to pass out by the end of the game. That next week, they had nine surgeries.

Chattanooga's Baylor School has wisely hired former Georgia Tech, Alabama and Kentucky football Coach Bill Curry.

Curry was offered the AD position, but instead will be executive director of leadership. He will continue his work for ESPN during college football season. n

Curry's father was boxing and weightlifting coach at Georgia Military Academy, which competed against Baylor in sports.
