Spurrier vows to top Enright’s victory mark

Steve Spurrier made his first fumble as South Carolina’s football coach Thursday while speaking to the Sumter Gamecock Club.

Speaking before a record gathering of about 700, Spurrier said he would win more games at USC than its all-time leader, Rex Enright. Spurrier said reaching 47 victories should not be that difficult.

Oops! Enright won 64 games at USC during two stints as coach, from 1938-42 and 1946-55.

On Friday, Spurrier was not backing away from his claim.

“I guess I’ve got to get 65 instead of 48,” Spurrier said. “That will give me a good goal to shoot for. That will give me an individual goal that I think we can achieve. If we average eight wins a year for eight years, we’ll get there.”

Spurrier noted that USC will begin playing 12 games a season in 2006. Add a bowl game and a much-desired appearance in the Southeastern Conference championship game and he believes eight wins a season is attainable.

Of course, Spurrier is operating under a seven-year contract.

“Hopefully, that will show people that I plan on being here a few years,” he said.

— Ron Morris

47, 65.. same difference.

I think it's possible... I'll give SC one trip to the SECCG in the next seven years.

I would be suprised if Spurrier is there longer than 4-5 years but who knows.

Me too! This could be career suicide. [/quote]
If he can survive coaching in the USFL, Duke and working for Dan Snyder, this ought to be a walk in the park for him.

He led his team to a championship in both the USFL and at Dook though. NFL stop was his only unsuccessful one.

he will more than likely get it.

but what an idiot.

he is like our ingenius president, george bush. who once said.

"There's an old saying in Tennessee — I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee — that says, fool me once, shame on — shame on you. Fool me — you can't get fooled again."

classic. :bs:

SOS is a has been. All he packs now is his name and what he did at UF. Teams have adapted to his coaching style and he isnt as fearsome as he once was.

Hes a paper tiger folks. I dont see him lasting 3 years at USC.

Devil's advocate, here...but what makes you guys think he'll be so much less successful in SC than he was AT UF? I think the cocks get to the SECCG in 3 years and then the cocks are in the mix every year thereafter. Spurrier is more of a "schemer" than anyone else in the SEC and he knows how to make it work for him. Fulmer recruite the raw talent and that's why I feel UT is in the mix each year...not b/c PF is such a great strategist.

Spurrier won't do a whole lot while he's there.....He won't even break that all time win record......He won't beat us on the way there I would almost bet on it...Anything can happen though

That would mean that we aren't going to the SECCG one of those years. With the recruiting class we had along with the ones that we are going to have, I don't see them going over us..

I don't understand how someone can say that just because he turned around Florida means he can turn around USC.

Two different situations.

Florida and South Carolina? Talent difference is absurd. Add in that Clemson owns part of the state....UGA/UT/others take another part....it's not even close. UF had Miami/FSU/UGA/UT and still had whoever they wanted basically.

Florida had a team with straight bowl appreances and a legend in Emmitt Smith leaving....they weren't as barren as some think.

Then....UF in the early 90's came upon a bad UGA team, average UT team at times, horrible USC/UK/Vandy teams....it wasn't nearly as tough to win the East.

The differences mount up

True, but Holtz sure came close a few times in the past...SC is not like whipping up on UK or Vanderbilt...Spurrier can draw the talent, he can get extremely creative with coaching, and he has ties in Florida--so SC can get it done, even with UT having superior talent (which is not unusual...we have superior talent to probably 75% of the teams that have beat us).

Obvious point, I guess, but since when did 8 x 8 = 65?

The Head Cock is more likely to be on the Senior PGA Tour in 8 years than to be coaching college football.

I have to agree with KDX like him or not Spurrier is a good coach (cry baby) but good coach. I can USC in the mix in 2 or 3 years. But don't get me wrong I can't stand the guy. I would hope everyone in the East would spank him except for FLA.
