Spurrier versus the Vols, the real story

Even as SOS mentions he didnt win every game against us. He was 13-9 against us at UF and ISC, they didnt mention his record at Duke.

Yah it's weird they didn't include his three years at Duke.

And yep, we played Duke twice in those three years, a home and home series. 1-1.

So the TOTAL record of Steve Spurrier vs the Tennessee Volunteers is 14-10.

Go Vols!

Spurrier was undefeated against Fulmer in the press conferences and interviews though. lol

It was his ability to play mind games and get in everyone's head is what made him different.

I would say the other thing is we had some of our best teams when Peyton was QB and never beat them, so what seemed like was always happening is that the SEC came down to UT and Florida and that loss knocked us out of the race in Sept. And I don't know if this is factual or not but one of the other things I seem to recall is how often we were favored and lost games to Florida. For some reason, that sticks out in my mind.

He was 9-4 against Phil Fulmer (7-2 at Florida, 2-2 after getting to USCe). The Florida Spurrier vs Tennessee Fulmer contest, usually for the SEC crown, was the rivalry that first comes to mind when you talk about Spurrier vs Tennessee, the primary source of the assessment that it was badly lopsided in Spurrier's favor. Peyton going 0-4 against him (which fits inside the Fulmer years like one of those Russian dolls) contributes as well.

Johnny Majors was 3-2 vs Spurrier (1-1 while he was at Duke, then 2-1 when he moved to Florida).
Lane Kiffin beat USCe-Spurrier his one season as Tennessee's coach.
Derek Dooley was 0-3 against him.
Butch Jones caused him to retire from coaching, beating Spurrier in both 2013 and 2014 after which he quit mid-season before facing the Vols again in 2015.

So the 3 doofuses (not including Pruitt, he arrived too late to face Spurrier) were actually 3-3 vs Steve.

The man certainly seemed to have Phil Fulmer's number.

Go Vols!

Spurrier was the coach you loved to hate back in the Fulmer years. He just played with us - knew exactly how to beat us. Waited like a fox in a hen house and when Fulmer looked away for a second, BOOM - a deep route right down our gut for 'give him 6'.

I respected his football acumen tremendously but, despised the son of a bitch because our coaches just weren't smart enough to know what was coming next.

Understand what your saying but its not Spurrier's fault our coaches couldn't figure him out. A lot of coaches he faced had the same problem.

We were very small favorites in 96 and 97, but other than that we were underdogs 1992-1998, maybe around a pick em in 1993 down there.

Florida has a depth of talent in-state that any decent coach can win regularly with.
That's true Fla has a lot of football talent
Spurrier was good coach ...not nearly as
He thought he was and when games didn't go the way he wanted ...he bailed took his ball and went home.....
Went to NFL for short term and it didn't
Go like he wanted came back to college football......I remember watching a game when he coached.....John Madden doing commentary and the play by play guy said how are teams going to defense this offense... Madden said this is NFL
These coaches have saw everything they won't be intimidated by his offense
Go Vols!!!!!!

The biggest factor in those days: Stoops v Chavis. Stoops made halftime adjustments, Chavis didn't. Our offense was as good as UF. Our defensive talent was as good or better, but the defensive coaching was far inferior. I once saw Bob Stoops in an airport just getting off the phone. Struck up a conversation and he said that he was doing damage control. He said they would have a recruit lined up, Spurrier would make a visit and then they would have to go back and undo the damage.

Spurrier and his staff had the perfect offensive philosophy to take advantage of John Chavis and his bend-but-don't-break approach. At least, that's what it always seemed like to me.

It's more than a little unnerving to think about how many great Florida seasons in the 1990s were built on the back of defeating big ol' Tennessee early in the year for them. Like a springboard to the national conversation for FLA, season after season. Meanwhile Tennessee would be resigned to the "oh well, here's another season where we didn't beat Florida." Over and over and over.

Majors was 2-2. The win over Florida in '92 was Fulmer, while Johnny was out due to a heart ailment.
