Ah, the really good ole days. They certainly came to play every night. The trifecta of fun. John Ward, “3 on 2 fast break , Jackson on the wing, BOTTOM!!

180 on offensive philosophy is 100% welcomed. Vescovi and Fulky benefit from a half court, grind it out game. Springer, Johnson, James and even Bailey Jr will thrive in an up tempo environment. I get that running through Fulky was the plan because of the big last season and Vescovi just cant run the point in transition as effectively but time to play to our strengths. As well as JJ crashes the boards, a 4 guard / Nova type system could wreck havoc for other teams.

They would also come out in their pre-game warm-up and do a scaled down Globetrotters type thing with their orange and white striped pants, exactly like the Globetrotters red and white bottoms. Mears was somewhat of pioneer. He coined the phrase, "Big Orange Country", while in Knoxville. It always been rumored that Dickey was jealous of Mears while they were at UT together

I had forgotten that!! Thanks for reminding me.

We were the last team to beat UK in Memorial Coliseum...then the first SEC team to beat them at Rupp. It’s my best “go to” trivia when I am having dialogue with a Cats fan.

Old folks recall “Sweet Georgia Brown” warmup drills prior to the game? Got the fans to Stokley early.

True. AD was Woodruff and he cut Mears budget because bb was surpassing football with Dickey. Mears went over his head to UT President to get his money. That was a catalyst behind Mears “resigning”. Mears is the father of TN Bb and Big Orange Country.By the way UT took that phrase and started using it for the football team and Mears received no royalties for the use of it.

Dickey accepted the Florida job in 1969 just before losing to Florida in the Gator Bowl. Mears quit sometime after the conclusion of the 1976-77 season.

Dickey was gone 8 years before Mears. Dickey left at the end of 1969 and Mears left in summer of 1977. Bi-polar disorder was the catalyst to Mears resignation. At that time, it was called depression. He went on to be AD for a couple of years at UT-Martin

You know the play of the Kentucky game was when it was 68-64, UT had just taken the lead with about 5 mins to go. Keon sprinted full court to get the block from behind, Springer was already sprinting toward half court expecting an outlet, Vescovi recovered the block and delivered an ABSOLUTE BEAUTIFUL DIME to a fully sprinting Springer for the easy bucket
