NOTES
The RBs did two different agility + ball security drills. At one point, the RBs were holding 2 footballs with coaches slapping them with pads as they ran by. G did a similar drill last year.
Will Friend was ALL OVER Ryan Johnson on his footwork today, as Tennessees OL coach is working overtime to make sure Johnson is ready to assume the full-time role as the starting center. Meanwhile, freshman Jerome Carvin and Ollie Lane continue to cross-train at RG.
The routes on air period was a bit shorter than usual, with too many balls hitting the ground mainly due to drops. Jarrett Guarantano was crisp, but Will McBride probably had his best day throwing the ball all spring. Marquez Callaway, Jordan Murphy, Jacquez Jones, Latrell Williams and Josh Palmer all had at least one drop today. David Johnson screamed multiple times, TWO HANDS when several of UTs receivers tried to simply snag a pass with one arm. Junior Brandon Johnson continues to be the smoothest WR out there. He doesnt drop anything, runs sharp routes.
Didnt see much of the DL or OLBs today, but Tracy Rocker did give some subtle praise to Greg Emerson during one rep.
j.simontonFor the third straight practice, Dillion Bates was working exclusively with the ILB.
Daniel Bituli is becoming a player coach and leader right before our eyes. Not only is he probably the most physically talented linebacker on Tennessees roster, but hes become the most vocal player in that unit. He coaches up the players along with the actual coaches, and he could be the leader of Tennessees defense this season.
Ive been very impressed with the physical transformation of both Quarte Sapp and Will Ignont. Both look bigger, more ripped, and more like SEC linebackers. Solon Page III also looks better and more ready to contribute.
Tracy Rocker might be my favorite defensive coach on staff. He doesnt hold back in practices and makes sure hes getting the most out of every one of his defensive linemen in every drill. Hes constantly giving constructive feedback, getting onto players, and coaching up his unit. Im very intrigued to see what the defensive line can do this season.
n.rutherfordReceivers coach David Johnson was coaching his players to high point passes when catching them. He was specifically telling them to catch the ball over their head and bring it down as they finished their route.
Redshirt freshman Maleik Gray again practiced with the cornerbacks having moved over from working with the safeties. Theo Jackson and Cheyenne Labruzza, another pair of potentially versatile defensive backs, continue to work with CharlesKelly and the safeties. Former offensive players Tyler Byrd and Carlin Fils-aime remain at their new positions.
Coverage drops, scooping up fumbles and tracking the ball in the air were the focus for the defensive backs. Once the groups separated, the cornerbacks worked on their press-coverage techniques and turning around to the see the ball. The safeties practiced their deep drops while keeping their eyes on Kelly, who praised Nigel Warrior after his rep.
Freshman Jerome Carvin worked at right guard again for the second consecutive practice. The big man from Memphis spent the first two weeks of spring practice working at right tackle. Both freshmen, Carvin and Ollie Lane, are now working at right guard.
Ryan Johnson, who has been working at center extensively this spring, was working some at left guard on Thursday.
Redshirt freshman K'Rojhn Calbert again was limited in how much work he did, but he wasn't completely a bystander.
Tennessee's routes-on-air period again featured only the wide receivers catching passes from the quarterbacks, but they weren't the only players working on catching passes early in Thursday's practice.
The running backs were catching short passes from position coach Chris Weinke, the former Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback at Florida State and the NFL.
Defensive line coach Tracy Rocker put his players through an agility drill and then took them to the stationary blocking dummies early in practice before the players worked on taking on blocks.
The first group through that drill included Jonathan Kongbo, Shy Tuttle and Kyle Phillips.
Rocker was hands-on in showing players how to lock up the offensive lineman.
p.brownMarquez Callaway and Jordan Murphy each had drops during Tennessee's passing-game work.
Callaway let a deep ball go through his hands, while Murphy bounced back from a drop on a slant with a sliding catch of a low throw on a comeback route.
Latrell Williams tried to make a one-handed catch on an out route, which is a no-no for receivers coach David Johnson.
