NOTES

sophomore defensive back Maleik Gray was working with the cornerbacks during the open-viewing portion of practice.

He had been working at safety through two weeks, but shifted to the other group in the secondary today.

Today, Pruitt was coaching both the corners and safeties on hand-placement and making the correct first-step in press coverage.

I’ve noted this was a possibly on the GQ a few times in the last week or so, but Maleik Gray was working with the CBs and not the safeties today.

The weather conditions were pristine, but Tuesday's routes on air period wasn’t exactly perfect. Lots of ball hit the turf. Marquez Callaway slipped on a pair of routes, while Latrell Williams had a lackadaisical drop trying to make a one-handed catch, earning an earful from coach David Johnson. Jarrett Guarantano had his moments — nearly perfect on throws to his left but airmailing several throws to his right.

Also the QBs and RBs worked on passes out of the backfield today. Trey Coleman was repping behind Tim Jordan, Ty Chandler and Princeton Fant during other RB drills, but the Louisiana native might be the most comfortable and fluid route runner at tailback.

Notably, Ryan Johnson was back solely at center, but freshman Jerome Carvin did see work at RG today.

recruits at practice today including…
4-star ATH Khafre Brown
4-star OT Anthony Bradford
3-star WR Jacob Pickney
Rashad Torrence (2020)
Michael Wyman (2020)
Billie Roberts (2020)

Also, 4-star LB Derek Boykins was in town for a visit Monday, per a source.

The tempo was quick today. Jarrett Guarantano was running up field following three throws during their routes against air today with the receivers. He looked sharp. His mechanics look a bit more smooth, and he’s also very vocal now. Guarantano coached Marquez Callaway on exactly how to run his routes a few times before he threw the ball.

There were a few too many balls on the ground today.

Will McBride continues to get a lot of repetitions alongside Guarantano. He had a couple of nice throws today, including lots of quick timing routes. That was the emphasis — quick slants and timing patterns across the middle of the field. After two throws, every quarterback would run to the other end of the field to start the drill over.

The defensive linemen were working on combat-style drills in the open portion of practice. Tracy Rocker was intently focused on Kyle Phillips in one drill.

Rising sophomore Maleik Gray, a former top-100 prospect who has played safety throughout his first year with the Vols, worked with the cornerbacks during early individual drills, potentially giving them another intriguing option at a position where Tennessee still is searching for help.

Gray wasn’t a major factor at safety as a true freshman, but he was highly regarded as a recruit by multiple members of the Vols’ new staff. That includes safeties coach Charles Kelly, who was involved in recruiting Gray at Florida State, the other team he strongly considered before signing with Tennessee in February 2017.

Freshman Jerome Carvin, who had been working exclusively at right tackle, was getting reps at right guard along with fellow January enrollee Ollie Lane.

Sophomore Riley Locklear shifted over from right guard to left guard and worked in between Drew Richmond at left tackle and Ryan Johnson at center.

Redshirt freshman K'Rojhn Calbert continues to work inside and was doing a little more limited-contact work on Tuesday than he was upon his return last week.

The likes of Kyle Phillips, Jonathan Kongbo, Shy Tuttle and Alexis Johnson continue to be first to run through the drills, but the Vols have some big young bodies on their defensive line in sophomore Matthew Butler and freshman Greg Emerson, who certainly look like you want SEC defensive linemen to look.

Tennessee's aerial arsenal was a little hit and miss during the early portions of Tuesday's practice.

It got off to a good start with Marquez Callaway and Jordan Murphy each hauling in deep balls, the former making a one-handed catch, from Jarrett Guarantano and Will McBride.

Latrell Williams tried to catch a high ball over the middle, prompting receivers coach David Johnson to extoll him to use two hands in trying to catch the ball.

Callaway slipped coming out of one his breaks on a shorter route, which made Johnson throws his hands up in the air before he instructed the junior wideout why it happened.

When McBride later threw behind a slot receiver on a route into the flat, offensive coordinator Tyson Helton barked at him to put the ball out in front of his target so he could continue to run and get upfield quicker.

One thing I notice about CJP practices is they look like the football practices I remember (many moons ago). BJ's practices looked like he went shopping at the "practice gadgets" store an bought everything they sold. I know the "juggs" machine likely helps hand-eye coordination, etc. but, passes are never that predictable and tackling pads don't have hands that reach back at your face and jersey.

Never thought to quite look at it that way, but I think you're right.

Watching these, first thing you notice is there are some players out there. The well is not dry.

In fact, I'd say Matthew Butler, Phillips, Tuttle, Johnson, Emerson and Kongbo could put forth a formidable front. If Kirkland and Bituli are back the LB depth will be good.

CB is the biggest question mark I see.

So they are too busy working their tails off to notice what's going on, on other parts of the practice field? I like it!

If we can generate a consistent running game...we're going to surprise some folks.

Defensively, there is talent at every level. If they can find 6 good DBs then we're going to be good defense. 1st year scheme regardless
