NOTES

Rocker was pushing his linemen extremely hard today, and he made several lineman run through drills again because he wasn’t satisfied with their effort.

One grouping in the defensive line who didn’t draw the ire of Rocker was Kyle Phillips, Shy Tuttle, and Jonathan Kongbo. Those three showed some great tenacity and toughness today. Paul Bain showed off some leadership as well.
Alexis Johnson and Kivon Bennett are getting plenty of work in the defensive line unit, and Rocker is making sure those two and every lineman on the roster are giving their best on every snap during drills.

Tyler Byrd was still with the receivers during practice today. Many of the other players who switched positions on Tuesday were still at their “new” positions.

Princeton Fant lasted one practice at linebacker, he was back at running back today.

Darrin Kirkland also joined the linebackers and did some work in individual drills.

Unlike a week ago, the Vols worked out in full pads today.

After a slew of position changes Tuesday, most of the guys remained at their experimental spots. Only Princeton Fant’s audition at MLB was short-lived. The sophomore was back with the RBs on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Greg Emerson, Matthew Butler and Eric Crosby all remained with a shorthanded offensive line. Crosby and Emerson were working as guards, while Butler was with the tackles.

Elsewhere, Tyler Byrd remained at wide receiver (repping behind Josh Palmer on the outside), Alontae Taylor at CB and Latrell Bumphus at DL.

With some of the injuries at the OL, Thursday’s first-team group (L-R) was Drew Richmond, Ryan Johnson, Brian Garvey, Jerome Carvin/Ollie Lane and Marcus Tatum.

... several coaches did praise Will McBride for a couple nice tosses. Jarrett Guarantano threw two perfect middle seam routes to the slot receivers. The only drop I saw Thursday from a scholarship guy was by Jordan Murphy.

Interestingly, Darrin Kirkland was doing individual drills with the rest of the middle linebackers Thursday. The senior displayed no ill effects from his recent knee procedure during the brief media viewing period.

Darrin Kirkland Jr. was back on the field with the rest of the inside linebackers going through drills early in practice for the first time after spending the past couple of weeks working out on the side with the other rehabbing Vols.

It's also worth noting than Daniel Bituli has continued to go through individual drills early in practices, though his status in terms of how much contact he's allowed to do hasn't been updated since earlier in the spring.

Pruitt's comments on Fant's move on Tuesday suggested the Vols simply wanted to get some film on him at linebacker to see if he could help there, but now it appears he'll finish out spring on offense, where he's shown signs of being able to help Tennessee out of the backfield.

Jordan Allen doing the drill right on his first try is notable in that context. The junior college transfer looks the part but he's been battling the adjustment he's facing to a new program, new defense and the demands of his position coach. He's been treading water trying to keep up, but perhaps it's slowing down for him.

Marquez Callaway and Brandon Johnson continue to look comfortable, and Latrell Williams had a couple of nice snags coming out of his breaks on short routes.

Redshirt freshman Jacquez Jones was back in the slot after working outside on Tuesday.

Jordan Murphy had a bad drop and Tyson Helton got on to the quarterbacks a couple of times for their accuracy.

One walk-on appears to be getting plenty of reps at center with the first group on Tennessee's offensive line.

With Devante Brooks and Riley Locklear, whose absences Pruitt declined to address after Tuesday's practice, dinged up and missing practice, the Vols have given Brian Garvey a ton of work at center.

Garvey is a third-year sophomore out of Brentwood Academy, where he played alongside Ryan Johnson and was an offensive tackle on the Eagles' state championship team in 2015 before joining the Vols as a preferred walk-on in 2016.

He has yet to make his debut after two seasons in the program.

surprised this hasn't gotten more run around here yet....

People can say whatever they want about that young man, make fun, whatever. But he has more heart and love for what he is doing than many people will experience in most endeavors of their lives. There's just no accounting for his being there, doing what he's doing, paying the price he is paying during the grind otherwise IMO. I give him mad respect.

Does the constant swapping of players to various new positions raise a red flag for anyone in regards to the talent of this team?.....

I am going to preface my response to your question by first stating that I think this team is lacking top-tier SEC level talent at almost evey position.

However, if you were in Pruitt’s shoes, would you blindly trust that Butch Jones and his coaching staff had every member of the team playing at their optimal position? I sure as hell wouldn’t.

No.

I’m not particularly high on the level of talent on this team, but Pruitt’s approach doesn’t concern me at all. To the contrary, I like that he’s taking nothing for granted in his player evaluations and is doing what he can to find the optimal positions for each guy on the roster and to help strengthen the weaker position groups. His approach actually inspires confidence imo. Everybody appears to be getting a clean slate and the best players, based on what THIS STAFF sees, are gonna be the ones who are gonna play

That was last year...unless you're going by the Vandy matra... all our players are returning, but we're not sure if that's a good thing or not. Should be a little better this year.

The only bright side is a Coleman Thomas is no longer eligible to play

Who was the former DT walk-on who switched to OL not that long ago. White kid who had an opportunity to play elsewhere but instead worked his backside off to walk on here. The article came out not that long ago.

Any word on how he’s doing?
