Spring Practice #5

Coach isn't paying him shat. He will sit until CJH feels like he's the guy. It's not like an owner or GM will be breathing down his neck .
I don't think that would be the reality...
Especially because the amount of money and the lesser time frame we have with the player.

We'll see, but money definitely will be a factor if QBs are all equal in skill- which IMO won't be the case because Nico is far better than anything we'll have left on campus after HH is gone this year.

How do you know there isn’t a clause that says if he red shirts that he doesn’t get the full amount? It would be ideal for Nico to RS.
I don't know. But If Nico believed he was mislead it could become something much more visceral. We're talking about real money now, and guys want to get that if they're entitled to it.

Again, imo Nico as a true freshman will be far better than anyone else on our roster. I like Jackson but he's about 2 years away from contributing as a starter.

He might very well be the best QB when he steps on campus. And if he is then I have full confidence that Heupel will realize that and name him the starter. I would rather see him RS. Jackson has been impressing from the practice reports we have been getting. I don’t think he is as far behind as you think.

Being misled? How? You think Heupel told him he was gonna be the immediate starter without evaluating his play at the college level? I find that hard to believe that Heupel would say he Nico commit to TN and you are the guaranteed starter day 1 no matter what.

Why do you think he sits?

They'd be paying him 2 million....to sit.
"They" <> university

And "they" just want to win...dgaf about exposure. Oh and if Tayven is starting, then he's getting NiL too...so really a moot point anyway.

0% chance Heupel goes off of who is earning more NiL from Spyre. That is just lol.

He basically redshirted

He was the best QB in the country out of high school and was a back up

That's my point

Being behind a Senior/1st round pick and a guy who was arguably the best college QB in America that year probably had more to do with that than Young not being ready.

Many earmarked him to start based on Mac Jones average performance (albeit in limited playing time). So one could say Young wasn’t ready to be better.

That’s why they practice. Whomever shows the most through Fall camp will start…first game at least. Then it’s what they do on the field. What a collective shells out to get a player to attend isn’t going to govern his decision.

Since the topic was analogizing Young’s freshman year to Nico’s situation when he’s a freshman, I’ll concede that if Joe Milton is as good as Mac Jones was as a senior, then yes, Nico will not start. And I doubt any of us will care in that scenario.

Those earmarking Young to start were off base, though. I told my Bama fan friends that too. Jones wasn’t average the year before. He threw for an ungodly amount of yardage against a great Auburn defense that year. He completed 69% and had a 14 to 3 TD to INT ratio in his limited time. That’s not average.

Bryce Young was even more hyped than Nico. Hands down #1 high school QB coming out of high school…instant starter type. Mac Jones was a 3 star who failed to hold serve when Tua went down the previous season. They weren’t off-base, simply thought they KNEW what they couldn’t. Kinda like us.

Except that I told my Bama fan friends before the season that Mac would start. So I did get that one right. And yes, BY was more hyped, but I was going with the guy who knew the system and had performed at a high level the season before (“failed to hold serve” is absurd…his numbers were ELITE. You keep acting like he wasn’t good in 2019 and I’ve shown you the numbers to prove he was great) over the true freshman. Star ratings handed out by internet deeebs mean little to me. I saw what I saw of Jones and I was right.

It’s funny how some of y’all get so caught up in star ratings that actual subsequent performance ends up mattering less than the basement nerds prior ratings. But the coaches making the call on the starter don’t care about recruiting rankings.

UT may or may not have a returnee in 2023 who is star caliber, like Bama had going into 2020. But if they don’t, I expect Nico will have a great shot to start.

If you're including ME in that "ya'll" then we're at a hopeless impasse in this discussion and I found my stopping point. Not a star chaser... quite the opposite. My whole stance in this conversation is don't bow to absolute narratives from any fanbase...including ours. Just recognize them. This time next year, all starting QB candidates are on an equal slate...some with bullet points on their side.

Fair enough.

Although I would never spell y’all as “ya’ll.” 😜

A factor? From WHO? This isn't Nike sponsoring him and using immense corporate pressure towards people to play him...
From the group of people who decided to invest into the 8 million.
They did so because they- with Heupels suggestion- believed he was the future.

Or else, we would have went after someone else for far less money. This simple logic. Not sure why you are struggling with this...

Y'all are so wierd. We finally pony up to get a real player and now you all question why he would. start as a true freshman 🙄.
He's obviously better than anything we'll have.

What's even more silly is NONE of you would dare suggest Arch Manning RS, yet we actually get a kid that's imo better and now we want him to redshirt lol.

Heupel was heavily involved in this.
It's not a knock on Tayven Jackson.

Nico was their guy. And the group didn't offer 8 mil for him to sit behind Jackson for 3 years.

I'm saying they wouldn't have bothered if Heupel didn't strongly suggest it to them that he was worth that.

Yes, of course there will be a camp and QB battle. Furthermore Jackson will be QB2 THIS year at some point imo will not redshirt. It won't matter in 2023 Fall.

He’s not a “real player” before the fact…American thing.

It’s not about WANTING. It’s acknowledging the reality of earning a job vs fan coronation. Heupel REALLY wanted Milton last year…right?
