The following players were limited and in black jerseys:
Riley Locklear
Latrell Bumphus
Jimmy holiday
Len’Neth Whitehead
Austin Pope in full pads

Darnell Wright was getting the most of the work with the 1s at right tackle. On the left side was former walk-on Dayne Davis who worked beside Cade Mays. Mays as you recall played right guard last season.

K’Rohjn Calbert repping on left side in drills but running behind Davis while media was present. William Griffin worked on the right side today.

QBs practiced rollouts, RPOs, and finally routes on air. In my estimation both Brian Maurer and Hendon Hooker carried themselves like QB1 and had the best days in routes on air. Bailey was low on some throws while media was present.

Jimmy Calloway and Velus Jones had strong periods while the media was in attendance while midterm addition Andison Coby struggled with multiple drops.

Bryson Eason, Tyler Barron, Byron Young all were with Rodney Garner and the DL repping get off and hand placement

Jeremy Banks is limited this spring after some off-season clean up which puts pressure on Aaron Beasley, Morven Joseph, Will Alright, Solon Page, Eunique Valentine who worked at inside backer.

Jeremy Banks wasn't at practice. Jalin Hyatt, Tiyon Evans and Cheyenne Labruzza weren't in pads. Malachi Wideman was limited during drills. Tyler Baron worked with the defensive line and Kenney Solomon worked with wide receivers, per ubben.

There's a handful of players in black non-contact jerseys, among them offensive lineman Riley Locklear, defensive lineman LaTrell Bumphus, running back Len'Neth Whitehead, wide receiver Jimmy Holiday and defensive back Christian Charles, one of Tennessee's early enrollees. There also were a few players who were limited or working on the side, and that group included wide receivers Jalin Hyatt and Malachi Wideman, running back Tiyon Evans and defensive back Cheyenne Labruzza.

Tyler Baron, Bryson Eason and junior college transfer Byron Young all were working with the defensive line. The defensive backs working with defensive coordinator Tim Banks included Trevon Flowers, Jaylen McCollough, Tamarion McDonald and Charles. The rest of the defensive backs, a group including Theo Jackson, Doneiko Slaughter and Tyus Fields, were with Willie Martinez.

One thing that jumped out is the intensity of defensive line coach Rodney Garner.

The focus on Tuesday for the quarterbacks, wide receivers and tight ends was on short routes and quick passes.

For the guys working inside (everybody seemed to run routes from both spots), the focus was option routes and reading a defender mimicked by a student manager before either breaking over the middle or out toward the boundary. There also were a lot of hitch and comeback type routes. It wasn't the smoothest session with even veterans like tight end Princeton Fant and wide receiver Velus Jones Jr. not getting the depth of the route right or not tracking back to the football, and Kenney Solomon and newcomer Andison Coby dropped passes to earning some pushups between reps. Sophomore wide receiver Jimmy Calloway had a nice snag on an out route.

All three quarterbacks were mostly sharp throwing passes with Maurer perhaps the most accurate on the quick routes. Points of emphases for the quarterbacks in their RPO technique include faking a throw when they hand the football off and keeping their eyes downfield through the mesh point so they can read the necessary keys.

So is Maurer gonna step up and surprise everyone? And Baron is the next Derek Barnett, calling it now. Well, maybe half a step lower but he's gonna be great.
Wouldn't be that much of a surprise if Maurer stepped up. He has the most physical talent in the group. That said... routes on air favor the guys with physical talent. The winner of the job will be the guy who manages the O, makes good decisions, and then delivers the ball on time and target. That will be more revealed in live scrimmage than anything reporters are seeing right now.

Baron a step slower than Barnett? That's not what set Barnett apart. He wasn't particularly fast as great DE's go.

I hope he is great. A little surprised to see him moved to DE if that's in fact what happened... primarily because of the speed he has at that size.

Heupel knows Maurer pretty well. He recruited him at UCF.

Patrick Abernathy was the only reason he came here. If PA would have been here a year earlier than when he arrived we would of gotten his older brother Woody Baron from VT.
