As a fan from far away London can somebody please explain why we do not play one or two matches in the spring against "cupcake" teams instead of scheduling them in the fall.

This/these matches could be used by the coaches like week 1 of the pre season in the NFL i.e start with the 1st team then a great chance to look at Strout, JJ Petersen, Lampley etc.
The play calling can be fairly vanilla if you don't want tape of the "best" plays and I know people may get hurt but its no fun going up against the likes of Trey Smith (good luck big fella) at practice daily.

I’m not sure if the NCAA specifically prohibits scrimmages with other teams I believe it might, but don’t quote me on that. I would say most of it comes down to time and player safety. The NCAA has limitations on hours and number of practices. Also, I know the cupcake games are terrible to watch, but for those smaller schools 1 game against a power 5 team can often fund their program for the year.

Thanks creekerballer:

I get the "cupcake" issue but its surely better than a "practice" with Botch walking around with a megaphone and calling dink and dunk plays to allow Dormady to go 10 of 10 to cement the QB job.
