Correction: Univ. of Tenn took "Volunteers" nickname from War of 1812 w/ Andrew Jackson and his Tennesseans (via @wesrucker247)

I didn't think it was exclusively the Civil War that Tennesseans volunteered. I always heard about the Alamo etc;

His article he attached for "proof" was totally unrelated to the origin of the State (and the University's) nickname.

In East Tennessee there were probably as many or more men "volunteering" by heading north during the Civil War. Most of the folks in the mountains were Union.

Agreed. We don't need that kind of baggage for one, and for two the true origin is so much greater and more impressive.

I don't mean to cause a fight but may I ask why?

Why we don't need that baggage or why the truth is more impressive?

We don't need the baggage of falsely having our nick name being associated with a faction popularly remembered for being pro-slavery and racist. That is how the South is perceived.

Also, the truth is more impressive because it transcends one war and actually includes several in which Tennessee was on the winning side. In fact, Volunteers being crucial in deciding the victory.

Thank you for explaining, I'm a big history buff and I hate it when people just want to overlook a portion of our country and our state's history.

Our state has more than one history in terms of the Civil War. Something that is often forgotten.

Of course, but its still apart of it and we shouldn't forget about it. Again I'm not trying to pick a fight or get this off track I was just curious.

I don't think there is a fight here. Tennessee as a single state has a very interesting Civil War story, as it was in some ways a microcosm of the whole war and the whole nation.

East Tennessee has always bucked the rest of the state, which is a source of pride for me.

east tennessee petitioned the state govt. to allow it to secede a la west virginia. Unlike west virginia, there was no strong union army presence at the time so the governor responded by sending soldiers to occupy the area. by the time there was a strong enough union presence for this to actually work, there was no point. i believe that one county actually did secede and form its own state.

hooray for civil war history with ash. one of the best classes/profs. on the ugrad side of things.

I thought the nickname was also from the war with Mexico/Texas Independence, where Davey Crockett and other Tennesseans died at the Alamo.
Wasn't Sam Houston also from Tennessee?
