Hey Vol Fans, this week when the Gamecocks come to town.....
Show your Volunteer spirit by participating in national Make A Difference Day!
On Saturday when you’re tailgating on campus and in the **** Sanders area, you can help keep our community beautiful and litter-free by utilizing the trash and recycling bags that will be handed out by volunteers before the game.
October 27th, 2007 – In participation with National Make a Difference Day, Keep Knoxville Beautiful and CAC AmeriCorps will head a recycling and litter prevention effort in **** Sanders area during tailgating before UT’s annual match-up with South Carolina. A similar effort will be held by the University of Tennessee’s Make Orange Green around the UT campus. In select areas, volunteers will be distributing recycling and trash bags to tailgaters to encourage litter reduction and responsible waste management. After tailgating, fans will be instructed to leave the recycling bags in clear sight to be picked up and recycled by the volunteers. National Make A Difference Day is created by USA Weekend Magazine and held annually on the fourth Saturday in October. Volunteers are needed for the event. Contact volunteer@keepknoxvillebeautiful.org or call the office at 521-6957 for more information.
There has long been a litter problem on and around UT campus after home games. Ali Virtanen, a frequent Make Orange Green volunteer and member of the CAC AmeriCorps Litter Prevention Team said, “It is unfortunate how much litter ends up on the ground, as there are plenty of receptacles available for easy disposal. There are people who work very hard every game to aid and educate the public about recycling and the importance of personal responsibility.”
This year’s Make a Difference Day project was influenced by a call for help from the residents and business owners in the **** Sanders Community. Made up of private commercial, residential, and some University of Tennessee properties, the **** Sanders community is regularly left with the residual trash from the game tailgating crowd. When asked for an explanation of why this problem occurs, Tom Salter, Executive Director of Keep Knoxville Beautiful, stated that “Absentee landlords who don’t take care of the waste disposal at their properties leave the litter for weeks. Tailgaters repeatedly leave trash thinking that just a little bit will not make a difference. People justify their irresponsible behavior because there is already litter in the area and feel that someone else will clean it up.” The city is not responsible for waste disposal on private property. On October 27th, the organizers of the project hope to encourage individual responsibility as Vol fans enjoy their pre-game activities.
