Rick Barnes discussion (merged)

There’s for sure some red flags with Barnes. I mean the scoring draughts that seemingly plague every single team he coaches is a red flag. The fact we’ve lost to much less talented teams in the tournament more than once (Loyola) is a red flag. With that being said though I’m grateful for everything he’s done and when he does hang it up our program will be in the best shape it’s ever been, his replacement will have it made in comparison to what Rick inherited

The NCAA tournament: where 98.4% of the coaches end up as losers every year and go to the season’s final resting place.

Eg; not just Rick Barnes.

Disclaimer: I love the regular season in college basketball. Try it, you might just like it.

Watched us lose the last three we played badly. Is this fun to u???

What is wrong with you? We have one of the best coaches in basketball. We're probably in the best position we've ever been as a basketball program, and you just whine incessantly about our coach. We're the SEC favorite this year. SHUT UP. Seriously. Go be a Bama fan girl or maybe the Georgia bandwagon is more to your suiting.

So tired of these assclowns.

Best team is getting killed by top ten teams.

Wow! Look a whole thread to discuss the coach. Who knew?

Heh… good luck with that… 🤣

Do Barnes teams ever sniff their true potential?

But hey now all the Barnes fans have an excuse for why we get bounced early this year too. Yay for the Barnes blind fanatics!!!!
LMAO

So, making the S16 last year without our All SEC starting PG is not "sniffing our true potential"?

That's some real audacious ignorance right there!

And nevermind the fact we have the most wins among SEC teams going all the way back to the 2017 season.

Suggest you stay away from sharp objects if this is indicative of your mental faculties.

Okay, stop me if you’ve heard this one before. Tennessee team, talented, possibly top ten, or higher, grunts out a tough regular SEC season finishing a close third, ranked for most of the season. Unfortunately, many injuries hampered their play, with timely losses to big men and our best guard, when we need them most. Any chance of winning the SEC tournament went out with a latch ditch 3 by our lovable but rarely clutch ZZ. He’s just so cute and that defense from 5 ft and below is amazing. So quick. Why he decided to take it on himself to be the hero to shoot his classic NBA+ 3, well I guess only a hero could explain that? One thing, to be a hero you have to make the shot. The NCAA’s were a disappointment in that while starting as a 5 seed and having their way with first round opponent New Mexico, the Vols seemingly couldn’t find their shot against a previously sagging Wake Forest team who had lost four our of its last six. It was a close fought game, but again due to some serious scoring droughts, and the Deacons timely 3’s, the Vols don’t make it to the second weekend. Barnes is still committed to another year, we wonder if it’s time he moved on, but he is bringing in some serious talent next year, top ten. Well, I guess we’ll see…

Next season: Stop me if you’ve heard this one before…

Barnes loves basketball so much, he can’t develop teams (long term). He wears his players out, in minutes that would be best served by playing scrubs or developmental players. Our teams are never the best in March, because our teams are the tired and injured (too often) teams. With the exception of that one great team, his teams don’t seem to get better. I can’t say… I do know that very few of his players seem to develop their shot while under his tenure, what’s that about? You can actually see the young players get better on defense, but on offense, maybe some of the big men, but the guards, it’s almost like they lose their shot. I don’t get it.

Would I ever get rid of Barnes, NOPE!!!, not until the loses start really start adding up. He’s a great coach. But will I be sad to see him go? Probably in a season or two when it’s possible we return to the Wade Houston days. But until that happens, I will be checking in to see what the next guy does. I know how far Barnes can take us, a ranked tournament team, compete for conference championships, never gonna really sniff a FF, much less win it all. It’s almost like I know what’s gonna happen. Is that good enough for pretty much any team besides Duke or the Lady Vols, Absolutely!

I just hope the next guy keeps me guessing, at least for a little while…

I don’t think that we’ll ever return to the Wade Houston days. Dickey simply failed to do a thorough evaluation of his potential as a head coach (and he didn’t care). He went for the shiny object which was adding Allan (even though Allan was already committed to UL). If any UT BB coach loses a game 40-101 he’ll be fired within 24 hours. Dickey had to keep him for another year because it would have been a bad look to fire Wade as soon as Allan used up his eligibility.

Wade was a great ASSISTANT coach and recruiter. UT will always hire really good, proven HEAD basketball coaches going forward. No matter who their son might be.

Wade's recruiting was pretty good. Terrible coach

I think that Wade’s recruiting never took off at UT because it was going to be Allan’s team. Who else at LSU played alongside Pistol Pete? Role players.

UT didn’t have much inside help while Allan was putting on an amazing show on the perimeter.

Yes, I agree that his recruiting (minus his son) was pretty decent. That being said, he easily underperformed what could have been deemed reasonable expectations.

Ultimately, the super assistant just couldn’t become a good head guy. Great guy, though.

Ky will absolutely destroy us (cue the "Barnes owns Cal posters")

We will have major problems with A&M; Ark and Bama will be tossups.

I expect we will end up 2nd or 3rd best record in SEC.
First comment is right out of your ass. Some of you neither understand the game nor grasp the fact other teams can be good too.

While I agree with sentiment with Barnes, how is the running off good coaches any different than most programs?

Georgia ran off Mark Richt, Auburn ran off Tubberville, Gene Chizik, and Gus Malzahn, Florida ran off Dan Mullen recently, LSU ran off Les Miles and Ed Odgeron who both won National Titles and were, at least, on par with Fulmer.

So how is Tennessee fan base toxic and those fanbases are not? The different is most of those schools (notably Georgia) landed better hires after running off successful coaches.

That being said, it would be a DUMB move to fire Barnes, he has us as a solid competitor in Basketball. I knew we were not going to win @UNC going into the season, idiots on here just bought the kool aid. We will see what Tennessee looks like in March. I always though our deepest run would be from a lower seed like a 7 or 8. Pearl's best run was with a 6 seed and not any of his 3 teams that finished as 2 seeds.

You had me until your fortune telling comment. Your first three paragraphs were really making an excellent point. I don’t know how you knew we weren’t beating UNC before the season began. You went from a scholar to a charlatan with that comment.

Yes, we have a lot of those folks on VolNation. The interesting part is you don’t hear from them for a while when they’re wrong. Definitive living.

Because Tennessee (and most SEC teams not named Kentucky) don't win away games at major blue bloods like Kansas, Duke, UNC, etc. We have been to UNC several times and lost every time. We can beat them in Knoxville but not at their place. That was my logic.

Finally caved and decided to read the 15-20 new pages in this thread. Still waiting on the “Fahr Barnes” crowd to give us a single name of who would do better. Just one example of who they could call.

Just off the top of my head with no research....I like Musselman at Arky. He's done well there. 2 elite 8's and a sweet 16 in 4 years. And BTW makes less than 5 million.
