I'm shocked the owners were this quick to allow the Sonics ownership to move the team. The owners of the franchise obviously have their interests, but there's absolutely no reason whatsoever to want a franchise in OKC over Seattle. Yet it seems like the league couldn't get the Sonics out of town fast enough.

I'm going to miss this leg of the I-5 rivalry sorely. I'm predicting and hoping that this move will be a complete and total bust, probably within 5 years.

As for a reason for this, could be a similar situation as the Houston Oilers. A new expansion team could be in the works for Seattle. As for OK it's nothing but good news.:good!:

Wish I could be as optimistic. Go look at Seattle's attendance record this year. Pretty good for a team that sucked beyond belief. An expansion team would be nice to have just so there would be a local opponent for Portland, but the Sonics were the first major sports franchise in the pacific northwest. You just can't replace that.

As for Oklahoma City, unless the franchise is a conference contender within five years, it will be just another empty arena night to night.

Oklahoma City Sonics?

Seattle will get another team IMO and they should get to keep the nickname

The organization has said they will leave the name, colors, and record books for any future expansion team, a la the Ravens.

Is that why they filled the Ford Center each and every night for a sub-.500 New Orleans squad?

The NBA isn't expanding anytime soon.
Agreed.

The novelty of a city's first pro sports team will wear off. I honestly don't have any faith in Oklahoma City to maintain the franchise with any level of success. The team will have to become a contender in the west, and fast.

Nice edit, Vader.

Everybody I know from eastern Washington and eastern Oregon share pretty much the same sentiment about Seattle and Portland, respectively.
