We have technology to change the boom to a "thump" whatever that is.
When will commercial flights be available with the new thump? It would be nice to fly across the country or to Europe quicker.

Or will the planes not handle the faster speeds?

It's coming, will be a few years before we see them commercially. Using fighter engines in the prototypes.
