So, I know a lot of people probably don’t care what I have to say, but here are some thoughts I have about how we played last night. Maybe someone will enjoy reading them!

1.) Guarantano is capable of being the guy.

He was poised after a couple of horrible mistakes by the OL. He was accurate. His ball had zip to it. He was confident in his receivers and they made some good catches. The chemistry between JG and all the receivers has improved and I am encouraged by that. But overall, JG showed toughness and consistent execution despite the play of some of his teammates. I was disappointed that we didn’t let KC run the offense at the end though. We could have let him air it out at least once or twice. I hope he gets more action in mop up duty the next couple of weeks. I’m glad he is in a Vol.

2.) Josh Palmer grew hands.

I was pleasantly surprised by #84 last night. He ran good routes and caught the ball well. He had a couple of drops, but in general he raised my confidence level in him and the WRs as a whole. Callaway looked good, Jennings fighting through all those tackles got me hyped, and Johnson was steady as ever. Wished we had seen more of Jordan Murphy, but I understand why they didn’t rotate a lot.

3.) OL...

Well.

It wasn’t great guys. I thought the first 5 probably were not the best 5 we saw. I think if Chance Hall gets healthy, he is going to take Ryan Johnson’s spot really quick and the right side was much more solid after he came in to spell Johnson. Jahmir Johnson has been a revelation the past two weeks and he made some key blockers last night. Very excited to see him develop throughout the season and get bigger, faster, and stronger. Trey was good, not great. But, I couldn’t do what he did, so who am I to judge? I think once every settled down *cough* BRANDON KENNEDY *cough* things went a lot smoother and were able to move the ball. JG clearly had more time to throw last night than he ever did at any point last season. Shout out to Nathan Niehaus! Dude held his own on the series that Trey came out for. I saw Carvin played, but I didn’t see much from him that I noticed.

4.) FB/H-back blocking. Woof.
Wolf and Pope tried, guys, but they whiffed on a ton of blocks that would have sprung Timmy Jordan. Really have to get that locked down over the next few weeks. DWA caught the first TD of the year (yay!), but disappeared afterwards. This position group (TE/FB/H-back) still remains a mystery. I am glad we are recruiting to fill that need.

5.) Coach Helton and the scheme/playing-calling

I liked it, folks. I am hearing a great number of mixed reviews, but I thought the majority of the time, he did a great job keeping things mixed up and pushing the ball north/south. Still too many damn bubble screens to receivers though. Not sure what era of football those ever worked in, but I just don’t have confidence in them. But, overall, I dig it. The 9 minute series in the 2nd quarter was MASTERFUL.

Finally,

6.) Timmy “The Buff Hamster” Jordan

What more could be said about this young man’s effort last night? He was a sensational. Glad he is a Volunteer.

Bama runs bubble screens frequently. They work a lot better when the guys catching and blocking are 5* athletes sought after by every school in the country

Don't know how anyone could like the scheme at all. WVU's secondary is arguably worse than ours, and we capitalized on it with bubble screens and 5 yard hook routes.

We need an answer at C and RG...Kennedy and R. Johnson aren’t it...

How do you know they are not good? This isnt last year.
One sack, no turn overs, lots of open spaces to run, too many easy completions all with our OL being dominated the entire game. WVU will score a lot of points and give up a lot of points, that's what I saw from last night.

I will give G credit, he hung in there and played well enough under tough circumstances. Wait until he gets knocked around hard and fast by elite defenses like Georgia and Alabama. Our OL is dangerous to a QB's health.

You break a new motor in slow, no need to blow it up out of the gate. WV's motor was already broke in. These coaches know what their doing!

Guarantano was throwing some really beautiful passes. Accuracy looks better than Dobbs, his senior year. Tim Jordan... That dude runs way bigger than he is! Dude is a dozer!

While Jordan looked pretty good, the Vols are still void of RB's like Georgia, Alabama, Auburn, LSU, Missouri, Ole Miss, you get the picture

I think it has more to do with the OL than the running back. Derrick Henry was an absolute stud in college and has yet to go off like everyone was expecting, same with Richardson,Yeldon,Drake, etc.

Kennedy played better after the first quarter. I'm hoping it was just first game jitters.
I'm hoping these things are fixable. I wasn't expecting the o-line to be dominant but to at least be serviceable. To be fair I thought that they looked as if they just didn't know what to do more than just being manhandled.

I thought it felt great to finally not have to see whatever awful scheme we have been running the past few years. You know, the spread option without the option.

Anyways, I thought our offense looked better. It was at least more fun to watch.

I was still disappointed that our defense is a one half defense. They have been since the Derek Dooley tenure. Not sure why, but they can only compete for half the game. I doubt it's been depth every year for the past 10.

Anyways, I had a hard time getting excited for this game. The coaching search took a lot out of me. I'm sad at how our Universitys AD is being operated. After the Currie/Schiano/Hope of going after a home run hire debacle, I don't know if I'll ever recover. Hah.

I'll continue to watch. It just won't be with the same intensity and passion as years before.

Meh. I saw a lot more north/south than east/west play calling.

My thoughts exactly. Especially if the other receiver doesn’t block well on the play.

With the center of the line not getting any push, the screens and tosses became our running game. I thought it was a good adjustment.
