Preface: Forgive typos, omittings, and additional words. Done in a hurry this morning. Also, if anyone would be interested in doing a short defensive analysis, that might be helpful. I don’t know enough about football defenses to even pretend I could write something as basic as these little posts.

Good morning, VN! I got some marginal response last week from my thoughts on WVU, so I thought I’d give it another shot and see what happens.

1.) QB play is solid for a second outing

Seems like we have a comfortable QB situation. JG did everything he needed to do. He made one bad throw that could have been picked, but wasn’t. Otherwise, he was efficient. Chryst as well went 3/3, 70 yards, TD. I wished they would have let him throw it around some more, but we are going to be ok under center this season. Surprised we didn’t see Will “the Thrill” McBride or JT Shrout get some action, but looking back, it appears Pruitt meant that KC was going to play A LOT. And he did.

2.) Welcome to Rocky Top, Jordan Murphy!

You can’t beat a DB any worse than he did on his 50 yard TD reception. The future is bright for this guy. Palmer for the second week in a row was a downfield threat, but this time he and JG connected on a 51 yard pass that might have resulted in a TD were it not under thrown ever so slightly. TD or not, I am extremely encouraged by Palmer’s play and the chemistry he and Guarantano have developed. Callaway was himself: steady, caught pretty much everything. Brandon Johnson was invisible this week, though. Jennings played limited snaps as well. JG needs to get comfortable with all his wideouts next week. Needs to put up play station style numbers against UTEP to build some more confidence.

3.) Tight ends....

Where are they? DWA disappeared for a second straight week. I will give them some credit though. Lead blocking was improved a bit from last week. We need to run half the offense out of the I-formation next week and really get Pope, Wolf, and Bumphus comfortable seeking contact and meeting it violently. These guys are proving to be a major disappointment for me personally this season. Maybe I was just expecting something different, but man, they sure have been a letdown so far.

4.) RB by committee? Check.

Jeremy Banks is a dude. Madre London may be serviceable BUT HE REAL SLOW. Fant got some work on the last two drives (good for him). Jordan missed the hole a bunch again, still ended up being our leading rusher. He’s just angry. I love it. Can’t wait to see Ty Chandler back next week. We are fine here.

5.) OL before the rain delay

AN EMBARRASSMENT. Utterly destitute of any effort. Very disappointing.

6.) OL after the rain delay

THAT’S WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT!!!! They still weren’t great, but they started playing meaner. It appears our new five is going to be Smith - J Johnson - R Johnson - Carvin - Richmond. Hall, Tatum, Locklear, Calbert, and Niehaus all got run as well. Seems like even if they are all equally bad, we have a two-deep that has several in-game snaps under their belts now. THIS is how depth is built and maintained.

7.) Scheme/Play-calling improved?

Did Helton call a better game or was execution improved? Probably both. Did Pruitt have more input this week? Time will tell.

Conclusion: Let’s enjoy a big win like this and try to focus on the positives. They will be few and far between for a while.

Happy Lord’s Day and Go Big Orange!

DWA's name was called a couple times. Had at least 1 catch, I think for a first down. He had one drop/miss. but he was also out there blocking.

its the age old problem of who do we take snaps away from to give to others? Jennings didn't get enough, Johnson wasn't seen, Bryd was just blocking, Pope/Wolf were also no shows. Really its hard to find where we take snaps from.

I agree with London he is too slow. seems like he was the RB caught behind the line the most often.

Is the OL playing timidly because they're afraid of getting hurt? Did the 2017 season of injuries instill hurt-fear into some of the team? And feeling less likely to be picked by NFL teams?

Coach Pruitt got in some faces during delay...came out with RB changes dedicated to smash mouth football...added FB as lead blocker...also started throwing more downfield...the team gained confidence as the game went along...secondary changes were nice, along with the turnovers...then, all of a sudden a route was truly on...Coach Pruitt got a decision to make on QB's...and, as always...

GO VOLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think the quality of the offensive call was the same this week as last week. I also believe Helton has called 2 good games. The difference was we played ETSU and not WVU.
