Something that really bugged me about yesterday's game

First off, I'm ecstatic that we won. I really do think we have a coach that will do great things for us. However, I noticed something during the second half that really bothered me. It seemed every offensive series went like this: run middle, run edge, pass, punt. With the exception of a play or two that looked blown, there wasn't really any variation. As the game progressed, it seemed SCe's defense could predict it more and more, and our offense was becoming less and less effective. Is this just a result of less talent at QB than desired (I'm by no means in the "get rid of Worley" camp, we saw that result at Florida), or is it a flaw of one dimensional play calling? I'll hang up and listen.

They figured out the same thing that we figured out by watching the Offense, specifically that Worley is NEVER, EVER going to keep the ball on the read option. Not a SINGLE TIME, EVER.

and once you know that, it's easier to defend this offense. It really isn't an option any longer. On the play when Clowney blew up Neal, Worley should have "READ-OPTION" and kept the ball.

But they don't implement a true "read-option", it's more of a "hand off or pass" offense.

I understand your point, but it was against the #11 team in the country. And they won. So...

like I said, I'm really happy we won, I am. But our predictability changed the game from us being up two possessions to having to kick a game winner. #11 may be one of the easier games we have the rest of the season, sans UK. If we don't mix it up teams like Bama, Mizzou, and possibly Auburn and Vandy are gonna stomp our O.

I like a defensive game, but I really don't want to rely on our defense to win the game for us every time.

I have heard it said more time than one that they want Worley to keep the ball more and run. Sounds to me its all on Worley not running the read more properly.

I don't know if I dreamed it but Worley has definitely kept the ball a few times on the read-option. No, he isn't going to take off 15 times a game but he has definitely took off a few times.

This is going to sound cliché but it's the truth, he's working with what he has against what the defense is giving him.

There was a few times I thought the play calling was too conservative, such as right before Palardy's missed 47 yarder, I thought we were in four down territory and should have caught them off guard with a run on 3rd down leaving us with fourth and real short if we didn't get the first.

but in the end it led to fewer mistakes and ended up winning, one more mistake and it could have easily cost us the game.

I will submit that not capitalizing on the turnovers that our defense worked so hard to get was the most disappointing aspect of the game. However, it was an improvement that the points scored were offensive as opposed to pick 6's etc... Regardless, I am thrilled with the weekly improvements and, though I questioned some of CBJ's clock management...I was pleasantly proven wrong. He actually knows what he is doing and I should trust this ball coach! I don't trust our QB...but the coaches, I trust completely now!

Worley ran it once yesterday for a first down but that was more a scramble than a read option. I think he runs it pretty good when he does run. I wish he would keep it more.

On the coach's show this morning, Jones referenced this play (paraphrasing) " Justin picked up a first down here, showing he can make plays with his legs...that was good to see". Seems like the coaches want to see more of this from the QB.

Hey obviously that strategy worked because when we go the ball on that last drive they had been lulled into believing they knew exactly what we would do and we were able to catch them sleeping and get down field and in a position to win.

I'd take our play calling over Spurriers little timeout meltdown. If he don't waste those I really think they could have gotten the ball back and forced us to try to get the TD rather than just the FG. But after his little TO experiment at the end of the 2nd qrt I wasn't shocked that he wasted those just to end up punting it anyway.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't SC lose Shaw before the TO fail? If I'm right, than I completely understand Spurrier's indecisiveness on 4th and mid in FG range. Seems there's not a lot of faith in their back up QB and I think Spurrier was questioning if he could get it done should it come down to it.

I noticed this as well and I believe butch was trying to lean on his D and set up the play action later in the game.

What funny though is he has gained 10+ yards on his last 6 carries. His run to get that first down was awesome. I think he has some flashes of speed in him.

When we have a QB behind center that's actually talented enough to keep the ball and make plays, we'll exercise that option. For now, we have who we have. Worley does keep it from time to time but he's not going to do it all that often.

They played to win and they did. Sad that you cannot see that. I guess the need to find fault is more important.

When I noticed the repetition that I'm talking about, the defense is what kept us alive. Without them showing up, we would have lost that game. I'm not trying to be a negavol, just trying to be analytical.

Butch is more qualified to lead our offense then armchair negavols I think. There are many things a HC has to factor in that fans do no get, including the personalities and individual issues among his players. Butch had a strategy, and it ended in a win.

He isn't overly mobile, but as long as he's going to completely carry out the fake, he might as well keep it 3 or 4 times a game, simply to keep the defense mildly on its toes. Something that simple can potentially be the difference in a 2 yard loss and a 3-4 yard gain on any given play.

But for all we know, these true freshmen behind Worley may not even be in the stratosphere of being ready to play, so perhaps the coaches don't want Worley running due to the risk. Anything is possible. I'm just happy we won.
