is that the Universities don't solely rely on butts in the seats anymore when it comes to a revenue stream for the AD.

"For the 2018 fiscal year, the SEC reported total revenue of $627 million, with each of the conference's 14 schools receiving a payout of $43.1 million. The new ESPN/ABC TV contract could increase the annual payout for each school by nearly $20 million per year, according to the SBJ report"

$43.1 million can buyout a lot of coaching contracts and with a reported increase of up to 20 million extra per school by 2023, it seems that fans purchasing tickets will be less of a priority than in years past

Now, its understood that the AD uses that revenue to support other sports that are less able to produce viable revenue to stay alive, upgrades to facilities, etc., but it still leaves a significant amount of guaranteed money every year

Tennessee is 12th in most valuable College Athletic Departments, with just under $92 million a year, so stop pretending we are poor so it makes you feel better for why we hire cheap and end up with bad coaches

The misconception is that we're not willing to shell out for a top name coach. The reason we're not paying that much for coaches isn't because we're not willing to shell out the money for a big name, it's because we haven't been able to convince a big name to come here. If all big names wanted was money, Texas would've lured Saban to them 3 years ago.

Some posters just want to virtue shop with their posts as being better fans for supporting whichever buffoon the Vols have handed the headset to for the last decade.

The money excuse and covid shortfall is the latest in a long line of excuses.

The will just isn't there collectively among the power brokers to accept the reality that Pruitt sucks yet.

Fulmer politicking for another botched hire only muddies the waters even more.

So, what do you think happened to all the revenue from home games in the previous years? We did not need it? TV money is great,, but not enough. Heck maybe we should just make them have free tickets by lottery going forward. Title !X did not go away. Neyland is not getting any younger.

Good post!

The money excuse is tiresome and simply not true.

It will be getting more real tonight for example. You think we won't be losing money with the empty seats? Those programs that did not break even will be breaking even less even. Schollies, training table, support staff etc. are still there to be paid. Why this is the worst season ever to make a change while still paing off the last coach.

This is true. It’s also true that we have one the most dysfunctional and incompetent athletic departments in the country.

You make a point. Somewhat shortsighted but still a point. If Covid told us anything about sports it is fans in stands are critical to the viewership tuning in also. Ratings for all sports are down. The TV money will come down too
eventually.

if ADs think they can make it solely on TV money, they’re gonna be surprised.

Agreed. And the other thing is who exactly is a “big name guaranteed to win”? Unless it’s a Meyer or Stoops or Gruden, there is no point paying a risky hire $10 mill a year

If they play along, ESPN (Disney) will keep providing the money 💰. They are slowly taking the sport away from the fans. Look, our AD/boosters hate the fans guts.

There is a reason why big name coaches do not want to put their career on the line for a bunch of morons running the school and athletic department.

I have no problem if mediocrity is the goal at UT. Just tell us that is your strategy to be like Vandy and quit acting like you are a prestigious SEC school. Because that is what is going on.

Probably encompasses more than the athletic department but “most dysfunctional “ appellation fits perfectly.
Could include fans, coaching staff, football team, boosters, administration, throw Bob Kesling in for good measure.

Can't wait to see a 100k seat stadium with 25k in it! IMPRESSIVE. We can be the brunt of even MORE jokes. Screw it. Shut it down.
