Given the mass exodus of coaches from Dooley's staff and no replacements have yet been made, I have to seriously wonder if the drama Dooley chided the media about, isn't in fact, reality.

Bringing in quality replacements will mean long term contracts and/or huge payouts. Hypothetically, if the floor falls through next season and Dooley gets the can, here we will be straddled with 3 more high priced buyouts. We cannot hire a new HC and demand that he keep them. What's more is, the current staff will want long term extensions too.

That seems like a high stakes gamble for an AD who never hired Dooley in the first place. I just don't see how Dooley's status is a secure one at this stage. I have to wonder if the Athletic Dept. is simply stalling until after Signing Day.

If Hart is indeed weighing his options at this stage, I again, hope he takes a look at Lovie Smith. Even though he has done a remarkable job at Chicago (the Bears looked like a definite playoff team until Cutler and Forte go injured), they just fired their GM and OC.

It sounds like they have Lovie essentially on a short leash (his contract extends through the 2013 season). With a GM wanting to hire his own guy, I doubt Chicago will try to prevent Lovie from leaving, if the Vols administration came calling.

NFL.com news: Bears inform GM Angelo he will not return next season

Guess the big money donors would have to get behind it, but this is the kind of homerun hire this program needs to make, once and for all. We can see what kind of impact it has made for Bama and now Ark.

Lovie Smith is a decent NFL coach ... decent at best.

Shannon is a top DC. Good as they get.

Unless some HC is bringing their dad, I seriously doubt they'll have a problem keeping Shannon.

Why don't you just hope the ship gets turned around with our current head coach. If we hire Shannon it would appear Hart wants Dooley to be the guy.

Only took the first sentence for me to stop reading that bit of stupidity. Sirmon and Wilcox left to go back home to the west coast, and not anything that may or may not be going on with the program.

Or he wants to snag the best DC that is/ will be available.

If his plan is to get rid of Dooley then he would not free up the dough to hire a RS. If we get a new HC that coach would bring in his own staff. This means to me he would rather see it fixed with Dooley or at least give him some time to get it corrected.

I believe I've made this point before, but I guess I'll do it again. Saban and Petrino were proven college coaches when they returned to the college ranks. Lovie has never been a HC at the college level. There is a big difference in being a HC in college and a HC in the NFL. Lots more work goes into finding talent at the college level and (if you follow NCAA rules) it isn't about who can pay the most(insert Alabama/Auburn jokes here). He's not a homerun hire. He's just as unproven as any coach with no experience coaching at the college level. You have to look past the x's and o's and see everything that goes into being a college HC. It's a different world.

Moreover, I'm not sure if we could find a better HC. I'm certain we could hire worse. Shannon is a solid move forward whatever unfolds at UT.

If it is RS, it shows that Hart is not afraid to take out the wallet and spend some money. Paying coaches is no problem and it is about time that we start flaunting our monetary power to get proven coaches.

Randy Shannon as DC would be accepted by nearly every HC that we would target. And if not, put a clause in the contract and he'll find another job fairly easily.

Good point. I would like to see RS coaching and recruiting for our defense.

I would too. Then I would have confidence in at least half of the coaching staff.

Randy Shannon is an absolute grand slam hire.

Kevin Steele is like a double of the top of the wall hire. Still good. Not great.

On one hand, I would too, but if the wheels have indeed come off the wagon (why there has been 4 coaches leave), then the timing might finally be right to make a move to get Lovie in here.

Funny. The point is that with today's events with the Bears firing their GM and OC, that Lovie's situation is tenuous.

Lovie has never been a college head coach. The NFL and College are totally different when comparing head coaches. Look at Wandstedt, Carroll, Saban, Petrino....

I am not sold on Lovie being a possibility or even the best choice for us as much as RS being a great get. Shannon and Lance Thompson recruiting in the south would be badass.

I agree that Shannon would be a good hire and would likely save Dooley's job. Problem is, it's just speculation at this point.

It's hard to believe that Hart would be so stubbornly reluctant to extent any staff member's contract, and yet hire two coaches to lucrative, long term deals, with 2 more positions to fill yet.

He'd pretty much have to hang his hat on Dooley being the man for the same duration. Do you honestly think he's that confident in a guy he never hired, with a losing record coming in and who has lost to one of the worst Ky teams in history? Hard to fathom he would.

Very curious to see how he proceeds. The whole point of this thread was to simply mention the events today surrounding Lovie Smith, and how that might benefit us IF Hart decides not to roll the dice on Dooley any further.
