EARL WHITNEY Obituary (2012) - Knoxville, TN - Knoxville News SentinelI knew him in High School, Warren Co. TN.. Didn't know he passedA good guy!!
Got thrown in the slammer by Ktown's finest one evening in 1978 at the illustrious Tap Room. Was with some Lambda Chi buds inside the Tap Room with it's soaking wet floors (someone tended to pull the toilet off it's perch in the men's room night after night.. Heck, I bought some Duck shoes just so I could enter this sh*thole) when two college coeds ran into the dump from the side door. Two cops come in and apprehend the young UT students and took them outside to their squad cars where they are spread eagle on the squad cars. Apparently, they were just outside the door consuming a beer, which was illegal, when the cops turned the corner in a surprise attack. So, about a dozen of us in the bar walked outside to observe the arrest of the two violators and as I was standing there minding my own business, a Knox cop standing next to me threw down his cig butt onto the ground in front of me. I looked at him and said, "excuse me, but isn't thaaaaaaaaaaaaaat - and BOOM, I was spread eagle on the hood of the car being arrested. Nothing better spending the evening in the city drunk tank with some of your favorite local personalities. So yes, many fond, fond memories of the Tap RoomThe beer joint next to OCI was the Tap Room. AKA The Tap Dump. I worked there for a few months in 1980, drank there much longer…
In the Fall of 1978 ( my freshman year), the Friday night before the Bama game we were all caught up in the riot on the strip. It all started when people threw things at a Bama fan’s car, then when a police cruiser drove by some nut threw a beer bottle at the cruiser, and it went to hell from there. I still have my 1979 spring yearbook, and the picture in there of me proudly standing on the Kerns Bread truck with a bunch of other fools is a part of not so great history for me to share with my grandchildrenGot thrown in the slammer by Ktown's finest one evening in 1978 at the illustrious Tap Room.
