Alabama has the top ranked defense in the country in terms of total defense - Let's look at where these numbers came from and what it means for this weekend:

Breakdown of UA opponents in terms of total offense (ranked highest to lowest):

Auburn (19)
Arkansas (29)
LSU (36)
South Carolina (39) - we helped with that in the 2nd half
UT (55) - that's embarrassing
Ole Miss (71)
Southern Miss (96)
MSU (106)
Utah St. (112)
UK (116)

BTW UA comes in at 74 with help from the early games against non-conference and with Brodie Croyle.

Notice anything about the list. The wins come against teams in the bottom half of the country in total offense. Also note that the two remaining games come against the best and 3rd best offense they will face.

The UA defense is clearly good. But as I watch the NCST/FLSt game with two truly outstanding defenses, it's clear that stats can lie.

P.S. This post in honor of the king of all stats - Allvol :worship: :worship:

With some help from 2 very poor offenses.

I'll have to admit that I haven't seen NC State play this season until last night.... but I've seen Florida State a few times and I am not impressed with their offense 1 bit.

The fact they are the highest ranked 2-loss team is either a testament of how the voters feel about their defense or respect for Bowden or denial that Florida State is just not as good this year as they've been in the past. Fla State is 11th and 12th in the 2 human polls. Tennessee is 15th and 18th.

Fla State has lost to No. 17 Miami 6-2 and unranked Maryland 4-5.
Tennessee has lost to No. 3 Auburn 9-0 and No. 24 Notre Dame 6-3.

Fla State's wins are against
(10) Virginia 7-1
UAB 5-3
Clemson 5-4
Syracuse 5-4
Wake Forest 4-4
North Carolina 4-5
NC State 4-6
Duke 1-8

Tennessee's wins are against
(5) Georgia 8-1
South Carolina 6-3
Alabama 6-3
Florida 5-4
La Tech 4-5
Ole Miss 3-5
UNLV 2-7

FSU is a very poor football team. I have watched just about every one of their games and they show no consistency. Bowden switches between two bad Qb's, who have no one to throw to but Thorpe, and one of their Rb's has been banged up. Their defense is definitely holding that team together, but how long with that hold up?

They've only got one regular season game left: Florida

It definately helps the Vols if an SEC team that it beat, Florida, beats another team, Fla State, that is ranked higher than the Vols in the polls.

I'd like to see UF win but let's face it, it ain't happening

Did you SEE how inept FSU was last night? NC State was just as inept, but that's not the point.

Florida has the SEC's no. 1 rated offense.... averaging 436.6 yards-per-game.
However, defensively they are 8th giving up 360.3 ypg.
Florida Scoring: OFF 33.8  ; DEF 22.1
Florida is 5-4, losing to (18)Tennessee, (5)Georgia, (15) LSU, and unranked Miss St.
Florida vs ranked teams: 0-3

In contrast, Florida State has the ACC's no. 2 rated offense  .... averaging 393.7 yards-per-game. :dlol:
However, defensively they are no. 2 giving up 275.2 ypg.
Florida State Scoring: OFF 25.9  ; DEF 13.4
Fla State is 8-2, losing to (17)Miami and unranked Maryland.
Fla State vs ranked teams: 1-1

Who have they gotten all that offense off of? The FSU offense I've been watching this season has been absolute crap.

FSU total offense:

vs...
L, 10-16, Miami (6-2) ...........165
W, 34-7, UAB (5-3) ..............489
W, 41-22, Clemson (5-4) ......370
W, 38-16, UNC (4-5) ............442
W, 17-13, Syracuse (5-4) .....427
W, 36-3, Virginia (7-1) ..........470
W, 20-17, Wake Forest (4-4) ..332
L, 17-20, Maryland (4-5) ........354
W, 29-7, Duke (1-8) ..............494
W, 17-10, NC State (4-6) .......121

correction, after last night's game, FSU is averaging (offense) only 366.4 ypg and 25.0 ppg. Defensively, their avg changes to 260.0 ypg and 13.1 ppg.

Those numbers would, if FSU were in the SEC, 8th in scoring offense... and 8th in total offense... 3rd in total defense... and 2nd in scoring defense.

The closest examples in the SEC are Alabama (6-3) and South Carolina (6-3).
Alabama offense: 28.4 ppg; 353.8 ypg
Alabama defense: 13.6 ppg; 223.8 ypg
SC offense: 24.7 ppg; 398.0 ypg
SC defense: 16.9 ppg; 304.8 ypg

AllVol,

Your last post does show that NCSt does have a great D - at least in terms of total defense (where the original post started). 121 compared to an average in the high 300s (and with 5 games in the 400's) is solid (scoring is a different story though!) In watching NCSt several times and Bama several times, I'd give the nod to NCSt in terms of defensive ability.

I agree that FSU is overrated and it's due to historical performance rather than talent this year.

It is interesting to look inside the numbers - e.g. why Bama is #1 in total D - they've probably played the worst offensive teams combined of any schedule. Their wins come against offenses from 70 on down. Include 3 wins against teams in the 100's and the real story looks different than the ranking.
