Is it right that we are average 318.5 total yards of offense per game?
Those numbers are just horrible. They would have been horrible 25 years ago when it was more of a defensive game. I suspect our YPC is low because of our inability to present a threat passing the ball. The old mentality of running to open up the pass is no longer relevant in this day. You pass and it opens up the run.Yes, national avg is 405.6 YPG, SEC avg is 412. Hard to be consistently competitive in the SEC with an offense that averages under 385 YPG, like most Chaney-led offenses over the past dozen years.
We're averaging just 4.74 yards per play, well off the national avg of 5.79 and SEC avg of 5.92.
Our rushing game is averaging 3.6 YPC vs national avg of 4.4 and SEC avg of 4.19.
Our passing game's 118.3 PER is well below the national avg of 137.4 and the SEC avg of 145.3.
Even given JG's limitations, I'd still like to see us throw on 1st down 40-45% of the time. So far this year, we've passed 34% of the time on 1st down (58 times), 41% on 2nd down (54), 53% on 3rd down (45), and 38% on 4th down (6).

- Our pass efficiency rating (PER) on 1st down ranks 24th nationally, while we're 111th on 2nd down and 109th on 3rd down.
- On 3rd-down runs, we're averaging under 1 yard per carry (114th nationally). Combined with our passing futility on 3rd down, it's easy to see why we're 119th in 3rd-down conversion efficiency.
- Of our 14 offensive TDs, 11 were scored on 1st down (1 TD every 16 plays). On all other downs, we've scored 1 TD every 77 plays.
- Not shown above but Tennessee has had just 1 play from scrimmage go for 40+ yards, fewer than any other SEC team. Sans UT, the conference average is 7 plays of 40+ yards.
So what you are telling me, is that some teams are making adjustments at halftime and some teams are not! hummm!View attachment 323574
