Some feedback on Saturday scrimmage..

JG definitely has the “leg up”....he’s far better than McBride so he has a leg up on him..... and he’s able to go through the spring whereas Chryst doesn’t get here until June...so it’s advantage JG there as well.

I know people don’t wanna hear it or believe because they’ve established an ironclad, immovable opinion of Jarrett after what they believe they saw of him last year in an impossible situation. But make no mistake, he has a significant “leg up” and a whole lotta Vol fans are gonna have to make peace with the idea that Guarantano is very likely gonna be our starting qb in September. He has tools but we all know he’s gotta get better with his decision making and getting rid of the ball rather than taking bad sack after bad sack....let’s hope Helton and Pruitt get him better and ready to go.

Edit: may I also add that perhaps JG’s decision-making gets better with a legit D1 OC in a scheme that makes sense....with, hopefully, a much better coached WR corps who know how to run proper routes and get to where they’re supposed to be (recall last year vs Bama when we ran a flea flicker and literally not one WR ran a route, all stayed in to block) .....with a legit TE that we all hope that highly-rated Wood-Anderson will prove to be.....with, hopefully, an improved OL that gives him time and opportunity to deliver the ball on time.
pocket awareness and defensive recognition can be taught. it's fair to expect him to get better at both.

assume he does, the biggest thing he needs to help his performance is any semblance of good o line play; need a running game to lean on a little bit, and pass protect.

nobody knows how that's gonna go, tho early returns aren't great. but they are getting creative personnel wise to try and address it, and we're looking at bigger TE's to help as well. i get the feeling they're trying to manufacture it best they can at this point.

I read that Alonte Taylor was taking 1 team reps at corner on Saturday. This kid must be a hell of a athlete. One thing I can say about Pruitt he going to play the best player.

yes, and he'll likely do that where ever they can be used on the field.

Kid is a superb athlete and I wouldn't be shocked if he did split time on occasion....or return kicks. Brings back memories of Carl Pickens...

agreed. not sure what we can do there to be honest. you know they're trying different things, just haven't seen any of it take.

but hey, if you get good safety play, and the front 7 is good, you can manage it. but kind of like the O line, would it be too much to ask to just "not suck"?:p

True.

Yeah I don’t quite understand all the JG hate. He’s definitely the most physically talented QB on roster and after seeing so many QBs leave Butch Jones system and succeed elsewhere it’s not crazy to think he’ll be much improved mentally. He seems to be one of the only leaders on the offensive side so far too.

Reminds me of the old Buddy Ryan quote about Wilbert Montgomery, his all pro RB of the Eagles until he arrived from the bears as head coach. Asked about how well Montgomery was doing during preseason practice Ryan said, "Other than he can't block, catch a pass, or run the football he's a great back."

Other than our OL, DL, running and passing games. and our D unable to stop anybody we're a great football team.

I think this team and fan base could use some of Buddy's nuggets of wisdom this season.

I don’t know who those 2 guys are, but they are somewhat correct. Not much done between the tackles, but the backs did do some damage on the perimeter.

Against a slow defense I wouldn't read too much into what the RBs accomplish on the perimeter this Spring.

The interior of the line is going to be a sore spot all season IMO and it won't matter how much speed these guys have getting outside as they will be facing elite speed on the defenses most of the year.

Still think Chandler could challenge for offensive MVP but there are gonna be some ugly games on the ground.

Offense:

The offense was 50/50 good and bad. A lot of mental mistakes on the day by the offense. The receivers again had way too many drops. Callaway had a good day as did Josh Palmer. Tyler Byrd made a good catch and run.

Guarantano played equally good and bad. While he completed on some deep routes, and was relatively accurate on the day, he’s still hanging on to the ball way too long. If he wasn’t wearing the black jersey, he would have been sacked or blown-up easily 4-5 times. The OLine was being overpowered, out-quicked, and was innefective against stunts.. McBride wasn't sharp today, and again a lot of it was because he was running behind the 2nd team offensive line.

Defense:

Tuttle, Taylor and Phillips looked good at times. The linebackers looked to be gaining confidence and comfort with their assignments. The D appeared to have gotten the “pop” memo, because there were some good licks being applied.

The secondary, especially corners have a long way to go...

Lol so we are pretty much where we were last year.....smh....i know can't fix it all at once....something tells me it's only going to come from classes to come

Googled it. Glad I don't know what that is. Enjoy the books..

Well, I didn't ask you to GOOGLE nor to like the books. Matter of fact, I haven't read the books. Just watched the series on Netflix. But then again, I'm not asking you to watch Netflix either. You ASKED what my post meant. You got an answer. Furthermore, since you GOOGLED it, you're falsely claiming to be glad you don't know what it is when in fact you do. So. . ., uh..., what's your point?

Have you read what you wrote? Conflicting info that makes absolutely no sense..

hold your horses, UF fans are saying the same thing about their Oline aswell.

How does that change the fact for us? I do hope Friend turns these guys into good OL. But right now, at this point, I dont see how anyone can have any faith that our OL will be good.
