Fact: We won the game.

Fact: We're 1-0.

Fact: Greatest improvement in a team is between Week 1 and Week 2.

Fact: We're about to shatter the attendance record for a football game, college or pro, with Va Tech.

Fact: Still three weeks before SEC play starts, plenty of time to "get minds right."

Fact: There's still a lot of talent on this team.

Fact: Most folks on VN think we'll go about 10-2 this season.

Fact: Believe it or not, we're still on track for that.

...

When you get a little distance from the internal workings of the App State game and look to the future, factually, things aren't so bad.

Think we're gonna be ok.

Go Vols!

One Opinion: We will win no more than 9 games this.

So tell us all Ole Swami, how did you arrive at your pigskin prognostication. Did you consult your Magic 8 Ball or did you have a vision? Bottom line, like the rest of us, you don't know Jack Sheet about how many W's or L's we will have.

I was watching #12 Michigan St. struggle mightily with Furman, and would have won by basically the same score as us, if it wasn't for a late Sparty score. And Furman would get housed by App. St. Not excusing how the Vols played. Just saying that college football season's aren't determined in week one. Tennessee played as bad as they could and still won. Hopefully they got that one out of their system.

Said it all offseason. Everyone wants to look at 17 pts from undefeated but we were 21 pts from 6-6. The margin is razor thin with this team. But, we did win and move on. Other teams struggled in thier openers last night. Get better, coach better, continue to win.

I have a buddy who is Louisville fan. They put up 70 on Thursday. Since he's also a big jackass I obviously get a Friday morning text "What happened last night?"

I text back : "We went 1-0"

Point is: Lot of bridge jumpers after only one game. I understand and have seen that many are the same who jumped a couple years back. Lots to be concerned about in the context of that one game - no doubt. But that doesn't mean it will carry over.

The only thing that has stuck with me about the game, true or not, it appeared the Offense was not coached very well for this game. I am not saying Butch is on the hot seat, but if I was Hart, the first question: What happen? why would you risk the support of the fan base and/or alumni to go that vanilla to hide you scheme from VT? We are trying to bring in money, donors don't like being disappointed. Now all the pressure for this team has been essentially moved to the VT game. Damn Butch! I know your the coach, but this was bit of a miscalculation on your part to risk the confidence of this team, fans and your reputation to go light on App State. Now what ever pressure these young men had going into their game has been multiplied 10x because on how they looked......and by the way, recruits want to be developed to win, not be held back by some secret squirrel idea on play books, the world knows how we play, go out there and kick VT's.......lower posterior and regain that confidence we all had before Thursday........this is not how I want to go out as the AD at UT......stop screwing around and trying to out coach, and just coach, now bring it in and give me hug.......cause right now........I need a hug.

Go Vols!

Fact: in its first opportunity to show that this season would indeed be different, the team went out there and almost suffered one its worse losses in program history.

I get that people can now exhale, but I think they are entitled to grumble. It was a terrible showing

Maybe we'll schedule UMass next year for our opener.

Why is this nasty post necessary. I would guess he knows as much as you, me, and most fans on here. Just disagree , don't be an a.hole to another poster.

Maybe but sense the mid fifties, I can remember many worst losses ever.

Relax. A lot of teams play vanilla in the first game to not show their hand. It wasn't the game plan that killed us, it was the execution. Tennessee should have won by at least two more touchdown's, even without showing all their cards. Doesn't matter anyway, because the playbook won't be Vanilla anymore and the players will execute better. Like I said earlier, Tennessee played as bad as they could and still won. Lets just hope they got that stinker out of their system.

I take great solace in the fact that last year's B10 conference champ (Michigan State) had trouble getting past Furman in it's opening game. Furman isn't even an FBS school and went 4-7 last season, while Appy State went 11-2 and is the clear favorite to win their conference again this season. So, the Vols aren't the only studly team that suffered first-game jitters. I'd feel a lot less hopeful for this season had we struggled to overcome a lowly FCS team like Furman.

Based on nothing more than UT playing horribly and ASU playing out of their minds?

If what you say is even remotely true in year 4..... then Jones is NOT the guy.

I seem to remember a bunch of top 25 teams having the same kind of opener games being the same way last year. Also on a note, it seemed like destiny for app st to win, the way the game was going. Bout pulled my hair out! lol. In the time of adversity, I say go vols.

Nowhere close to the "worse loss in program hx", as App State is not a bottom dwelling program.
What I saw was an offensive line having issues with execution, coupled with some very erratic and uncharacteristic decisions by Dobbs. In addition, some lapses on special teams ( again uncharacteristic ). I loved the effort and execution of our defense.
Bottom line, this team accomplished more in a come from behind victory against App State, than they would have with a blow-out victory.
So the knock on CBJ and UT from last year was the opposite (not being able to win the 4th Qtr.). We dominated the 4th this past Thur., and I'll take it and move on.

Not sure I follow sjt, I was just stating the facts from last season. I think this team is talented but not deep talented. The o line has been a problem since he's been here and before. IMO, it takes about 5 years to rebuild the oline from the mess it was in. Maybe that makes it a little more clear what I'm getting at.
