First, I think we need to establish a good, better, best policy to help determine our next DC.

First the "good" option. We make a run at John Chavis. I know, i am an idiot and know nothing. I would ask you this, if he is so bad, how come his scoring defense (12th in the nation) was almost a touchdown better than ours (28th in the nation). If we went after him with a deal that put him in around $850,000 to $1,000,000, I believe he would come home. Think about it, we was UGA third choice and their fourth choice got over $700,000.

Next is the "better" option. We go the NFL route and hire a experienced DL coach who has worked primarily in the 3-4 system. Names should include Pepper Johnson at NE, Kacy Rogers at Miami (former ut player), or Ron Aiken at Arizona. This would allow for a transition to the 3-4 system and would establish immediate creditability to our staff.

Finally is the "best" option. We make a serious run at Bud Foster. I know, he has been there 23 years. OK, so what. Every time there is an opening for a HC at some mid-level school, he make the comment that he might consider it. The problem is that he does not interview well and that goes a long way with ADs. I believe we could sale him on two different fronts. First, the money. We offer him $750,000 with a structured incentive that if his defense finishes in the top 15 in both scoring and yards, he gets and additional $250,000. If his defense finishes in the top 5 in both yards and scoring, he gets and additional $500,000. I know that is a lot of money but lets do the math, we paid Monte 1.2 mil last years and gave up over 20 points a game and finished just outside the top 20 in yards allowed. The second front would be that ACC DC don’t get the high profile HC jobs. They don’t, if they are lucky, they get the ECU job or the SMU job. SEC DC do get the god HC jobs. Look at Bo at Neb. and Muschamp at Texas. Look at the love for Kirby this year and Charlie Strong at the ville. With these two factors, I believe we could get him for our DC.

Just a few thoughts.

Chavis? You can't be serious. Foster is not leaving Va-Tech. I would like to go the NFL route myself.

Because LSU has significantly better linebackers than we do...

Bud Foster will not leave. He can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Beamer is almost done there.

Kacy Rogers... now that's interesting. I wonder if he is DC material?

Oh no. It took us 15 years to get rid of that mustang package and that sorry 3rd down D.

Sounds like UGA's search. Foster, Chavis, you left out Kirby Smart and onto to a NFL DL Coach. As it turned out UGA ended up with Todd Grantham from the Dallas Cowboys and he is putting in a 3-4 defense at Georgia.

A 3-4 makes it harder on the QB to figure out who is rushing and allows you to tweak your defense to more targeted matchups.

I'm excited about moving to the 3-4 as it is not used as much in College as the 4-3 and will require the opponents coaches to change their strategies to prepare for it.

Good=Lance Thompson
Better= Lance Thompson,
Best= Lance Thompson, Al Wilson G.A./Linebackers

Another reason 3-4 is going more mainstream is lack of available quality DT, versus abundance of DE/LB hybrids that would thrive in the 3-4 scheme. 3-4 requires less overall depth at DT, but you have to have a big guy that can occupy two blockers, hold the line against the run, and push the pocket.

I like the idea of bringing Kacy Rodgers home and he can bring his soon, who's currently committed to Miami, with him. He's a cornerback that the previous staff offered and we're in need of those.

Check out my thread on Karl Dunbar. He currently coaches D line for the Minnesota Vikings. He has an SEC and NFL pedigree, and was on staff with Dooley at LSU. Would be a great hire for DC IMO!

I am sure the call was made to Foster as much as I am sure he said he wasn't interested. He is going to be the next HC at Tech and I think they assured him it would happen in the next 5 years. He isn't leaving.....

The truth is we are going to have a hire either an NFL guy or give the job to Lance Thompson. I really don't like either option. I don't see getting a proven NFL guy because even at 1 million they can make alot more in the NFL. I am not crazy about Thompson getting it because he is unproven and really to say Thompson didn't have much sucess at UCF as a cordinator would be a compliment. They were plain awful.

So IMO we are going to have to get the pocketbooks out. We have to get a proven guy. It has to either be a proven NFL cordinator or a proven College cordinator hopefully with SEC ties. Honestly I have no clue who that could be right now. It seems like everyone I would like has already turned us down. It seems like Dooley wants people he has either worked with or has ties to people on the staff already....

We shall see...

Chavis is a horrible idea. Chavis beats up on lesser competition but gets outclassed any time he faces a quality OC with legit talent.

Foster probably won't leave VaTech.

Unknown if UT can attract a capable NFL guy.

UT is a high risk proposition right now. It is a hard sell no matter who they approach unless they become willing to hire someone known to be mediocre or someone who is unproven.

Let's be honest. As we sit right now, the new staff is more likely to be fired than win a championship. It isn't because they're bad coaches... they are just inheriting a tough situation. The talent on the roster is depleted. It is unknown (some might consider it unlikely) if UT can salvage what they need out of the '10 class.

Now if they find a way to add 3 more quality OL's, an LB or two, and another DT or two then the whole thing swings back a little more in their favor... but by then they will probably have finished hiring the staff.

Really? So awful they won their conference championship? That is bad...:eek:lol: I hope we never win one of those, if that's awful.

Taking a LB coaching job for Saban at Bama, as opposed to staying on at UCF in that capacity was likely viewed as a faster means to getting a DC job at a major BCS program. Thompson might have been in line to be the next DC at Bama, if he hadn't come here to learn under Monte.

First- Leave it up to Coach DD to hire the DC
Second- for the interest in playing lets go get the best and let Coach DD pick him.
Thirdly- Pat Summit, she believes in Defense
Fourth- Why not Tony Dungy since most of you are dreaming

Seriously- Promote Lance Thompson who has been a DFC for three years at Central Florida and studied under Saban and Monte, Chuck Smith DL from the Jets

Excuse me...but this is what fan forums are for...people shooting the breeze and giving their opinions. Is that OK with you? If not, I think there's a place in Communist China that might make you feel more comfortable. If you want to get real pragmatic about it...why don't we just do something more constructive with our time than following a sports team in the first place? Most of the players aren't from TN, and we have no real input in the outcome.

:hi: not trying to be smart but all Chavis is now is a useless conversation. Never backup! we will have a good DC in just a few weeks. If Steel don't want TN then :rock:forget aboutem. There are lots of people to coach. :eek:hmy:
