The Lady Vols’ fate going forward depends, I believe, on how the staff approaches and prepares for it even more than the players.
NOT to say that our defense (OMG!) and hitting (Lawd help us!) aren’t gonna need to improve, but …
I feel this year as I have every year that our coaches going into post-season are only barely thinly-veiled “pretend loose… pretend not worried … pretend not panicked.”
The way, every season, the vibe from the top is so obviously trying to show on the outside like everything’s cool, but then as games get under way you can feel that no one believes it as strongly as they are acting like they do. When the staff starts making the same decisions every season that say otherwise, when you can almost see the sphincter tightening, that’s when we are in danger of ending with a :::::thud:::::: … again.
Clearly the team needs to relax and just get up to the plate and make solid contact with the dang ball. They don’t need to worry about which side of the field to hit toward, or whether to hit a fly ball or a grounder. THEY JUST NEED TO SEE THE BALL AND HIT THE BALL SOLIDLY. They do that and they’ll be okay. They are all overthinking in the box.
