Let's be honest. If Jon Gruden comes to TN as next head coach, would these kids "buy in" what he is saying? Who knows, but I'll guarantee that every kid KNOWS who he is.

We live in society right now where kids can "look up" names. They can look up their W-L records. They have access to what we have. What AD's probably have.

Right now, it's not about a up and comer, UNLESS they have really succeeded in a POWERHOUSE team.. Right now, it's how much of a "GENIUS" they are. OR even CELEBRITY STATUS.

Yes I said it. Celebrity Status. But lets be honest. If you were recruited by Urban Meyers, Nick Saban, Chip Kelly, or Jon Gruden. As an 18 year old... who would you go for?

There is NO 18 year old who doesn't know these names. But if you get someone who has lesser of a status, we might be in trouble.

Basically what I'm saying is.... TN HAS TO MAKE A BIG SPLASH HIRE, or we are DONE.

Good luck with that. Just don't see that SPLASH hire in the cards.

Just go a head and start a thread he's hired. Everyone will take the bait for at least 6 hours. It may even make the Finebaum/Springer show if the timing is right.

Agreed. In the meantime, we need to not look like a dumpster fire program with our fanbase before the coaching change happens so we don’t scare away that type of coach.

Yeah, they can look-up Gruden's W-L record. It's 95-81 as a head coach, a .540 winning percentage.

But he is a celebrity and a big name. He did win a Super Bowl -- although it was in his first season in Tampa with a team that was built by Tony Dungy. He made the playoffs just 4 other times and never made it out of the first round and he was eventually fired.

People are so caught-up in this Gruden silliness that most of them haven't even bothered to really look at his resume. He's been much more successful as a TV personality.

Why not hire Jared Kushner then? Or Rosie O'Donnell?

Great programs are great programs because of a long-term commitment to success.

If you heard Gene Stallings yesterday, he summed it up nicely: All we tried to do was recruit the best kids we could and coach up to play Alabama football.

He didn't say "Gene's football". Or the Bear's football. He said "Alabama" football.

That's what UT needs to do.

I honestly believe if we do not get a splash, and the coach tanks. Vol fans will not withstand another decade of mediocrity, and the football program may never be the same. Sorry but it’s true.
Only so much disappointment can be tolerated until apathy sets in. Look at dolphin stadium down here, after 25 years of mediocrity, no one cares about them anymore.

You don't seem to understand the difference between college football fans and pro football fans.

Done? That's a bit over the top don't you think? This program has been through a lot of ups and downs over many decades. It's bigger than any recruiting class or coach. It's not going to be done in by anybody they hire.

Baloney. UT has seen a lot of ups and downs. This is another bump in the road, but the program remains...and will continue to be supported passionately by the fans.

No matter who we get...I would like them to be HONEST, KNOWLEDGEABLE, DEDICATED, AND HAVE THE WILL TO WIN!

That's all we truly need! I don't need the 2nd coming of Saban or someone as famous as Brad Pitt. Just a good guy that will WORK HARD and TEACH his recruits to be disciplined and give their ALL for TENNESSEE!

I think that's exactly what happened. We lined up and played Cincinnati football. That's the problem!

Serious question -- Do people on this site really believe Gruden will be our next coach?

or is this another Paul Bain type subject.

If its real, I just don't understand it. I will never understand why he would be our top choice for a new coach.

social media impact should not be the reason we hire someone. you know what happens with a splash? it ends pretty quickly. it's a short term resolution to a long term problem...and generally doesn't work out too well in the long run.

the pool of coaches available simply doesn't allow for the possibility of getting both a splash hire that impresses everyone AND provides the long term solutions we need.

Lest we forget he was playing a team that he had built, so being Dungys team is a wash.

Migrating toward Jacksonville till things get better down there. Tampa sells out every game ever since they got a team. UT will get back on track. Players love it here. Most fans have some class about them.

Didn't you start a thread not long ago that said there is NO way that Butch will be fired this year or next? Is there a point where you say to yourself....maybe I should just be quiet? I bet you are a barrel of fun at parties.
