So, who quit?!

I live in Atlanta but was actually considering making the trip for the spring game. I decided not to go because sadly after last season, I have become a bit melancholy toward football and made other plans.

Pruitt was speaking to me. Do I blame him? Nope. Not at all.

It is honestly refreshing to be called out. For once we have a coach that expects the best and holds people accountable. That is exactly what we need. Fans like myself included. Bravo coach

I think Pruitt speaks straight from the heart, but could be amping up calling folks out now to get greater sense of urgency over summer...break them down to build them back up...still a refreshing departure from previous circus.

Abernathy is not a good SEC football player. No other way to say it. I would be very surprised if Theo Jackson doesn't get the starting nod over Abernathy in the opener.

I believe Jackson and a healthy Kelly will surpass him...I believe he and Byrd are definitely in the group Pruitt was talking about

I'm ok with easing up on a hit... why take a guy out with an injury?

But if they just quit, no effort to close on a play, then yeah those guys need to rethink why they are even out there. JP might be over reacting a bit.

Now... I did see some video tape of the fans... way too many were talking on cell phones, taking selfies, and eating hot dogs. No fights observed, a lot of folks just sitting.

Fans aren’t going to scream their heads off for scrimmage. Which team do you scream for and which do you sit quietly for?

Ah, I see. The fact I did not attend makes me a lazy ass fan. Has zero to do with the fact my health is ****. And I'm sure others had legit reasons as well, but then, they're just lazy ass fans as well. There's this thing called life and it tends to get in the way sometime but that never seems to stop judgmental pricks.

Anyone who didnt attend, for any reason, is justified in their decision. Its THEIR time and money, they can spend it any way they choose how. Doesn't make them less of a fan and it certainly doesn't make one damn bit of difference in terms of how the football team plays or develops.

This lazy ass fan ain't traveling a 1000 miles to see any football game, much less a scrimmage. We have this thing called a TV with great seats.:hi:

You okay Weez? Did you read all of JP's post? Lulz, me either.

Seriously tho, did you read the quote on Pruitt? The part where he said "some had a legitimate reason" for not being there? No doubt that included you.

Anyway, feel better.

I think it was a strategic plan by Pruitt showing the players that he will call anyone out for lack of effort. I have no issues with it. Gotta remember this guy is used to having 80-90K for spring games in AL. He knows the fan base at UT loves football. You can see the guy has a passion for football.

Pruitt needs to look in the mirror if players don’t want to play for him instead of blaming everyone around him (including the fans)for his lake of progress thus far.

If this is your take, then you never played one minute of organized team sports in your life and have no concept of what it takes to win and what a Head coach has to do to get the most out of his players.

He’s had these kids for 15 practices and he’s addressing their poor work habits and attitudes that were developed and thrived under the previous head coach. He’s doing his job in calling out those players who aren’t committed to their teammates and winning football games.

Also, he hasn’t blamed a single living soul for anything at this point. I mean absolutely NO ONE for ANYTHING, period. I don’t know who he was talking about, you don’t know who he was talking about, nobody knows who he was talking about. He simply said what everybody knows....we have players on this team who are quitters, who certainly aren’t “giving their all for Tennessee”.

He’s trying his best to turn a ish hole of a program around and he’s gonna have to hold existing players, the players that were in large part responsible for the 4-8/0-8 debacle accountable......and if they’re gonna continue to quit like they did last year then he’s gonna call them out, confront and run em off of they’re not gonna get with the program.

Vols fans need to understand the difference between the truth and fantasy. The make believe worlds of Wendy the Witch, pig farming Circe, and Hermione Granger, those wand waving wenches doesn't exist. There won't be no sudden return to an orange winning orgy. We got to regrow as a program and a team. We got to rediscover orange pride and the orange dream. When Spurrier exclaimed, "My, my, things sure have changed on Rockytop." He was more right than I would ever want him to be. No magic wand is going to get it done but we got to change again. This time back to what we once had been. You're going to hate me for saying this, but I believe it all the same. We need to also believe what ole Timmy Tebow claimed. That Tennessee is a sleeping giant. We can help start this turnaround by stopping the "Butching" and believing until and unless proven otherwise that Pruitt can do it. Those of you that got it, get behind stalled bus and push. Put that dayum hawthorn and ash sticks down and push, push, push, and push. It's going to take work not magic to get the job done. Now, let's gandy dance.

Interesting. Pruitt questioning fans equals okay. Fans questioning Pruitt equals not okay? I'm all for having patience and giving Pruitt his chance, but I worry some are so enamored that we're entering that point again where the head coach can do no wrong. Every coach has their defenders. I get that. But we(TN fans) tend to give devotion to a coach well before he earns it. Happened with Kiffin, happened with Dooley, happened with Butch.

We "didn't draft" Pruitt. He "chose" us. So I guess he did us a favor by taking lots of money to coach our players. Said players look less than impressive at the spring game and suddenly that's all on them, and somehow, the fans. I personally don't remember conducting any spring practices, yet somehow, as a fan, it's my fault? My point is, it's just not a good look. It's gonna rub some people the wrong way and it's easy to understand why.

All of that aside, we still have a long way to go. And like I said, fans should be patient with Pruitt and give him a chance. He's a first time head coach and there will be missteps. I think the criticism of fans was such a misstep. You take away the meet and greet with the players and expect 100,000 fans to show up after a 4-8 season? Not realistic. One of the biggest draws of the OW game was getting to meet the players. Take that away and you're just watching a glorified practice.

Glad to see your posts and hopefully feeling better.

I think CJP is about to learn a hard life lesson. He doesn't know what it is like to lose.

Ever had a coach or boss you didnt want to work for. You know, a real douche bag? Did it affect your performance? Ever had a coach or boss you loved to work for? Performance?

Part of a coaches job is to inspire and motivate players.

I don't think it's coaches job to motivate me. If he does his JOB (you know, the one he gets paid millions for) with the players then we'll know, and we'll come out and support the team. So far, he's said the team doesn't took inspired or motivated. Yet, I'm supposed to be? He's closed practice, allowed little access, took away fan meet and greet. And, when he has spoken it's been grumbling about effort. Who's doing good coach? "No one.". What's impressed you? "Nothing."

And then pops his head above ground 4 days before the spring game and says we need fans to come? Huh?? Then questions fans when they don't show. What?
And, im a snowflake and lose my fan card if I call bull **** on that?

Well, Fu#k you. He's dam lucky that so many people showed up considering the facts.

Dammed if I'm gonna applaud a bammer for this. I can't believe Vol fans.
Fwiw, I hope he motivates players. I hope he inspires players. But, I have no idea if he does. Based on the O&W game, the defense (his specialty) looked like an unmotivated **** show.

As long as coaches get paid millions, I'm going to place that on them, rather than applaud them for running off players. I'd be more convinced of his ability if he keeps players and turns them around, more so than running them off.

Here I think we're able to isolate part of the problem.

This fan demands that the team get better first, and then he'll show up. That's called conditional fandom. That's not loyalty; it's "do this for me and I'll reciprocate" fandom. It's contract fandom. That's D4H quality fandom.

As for the final bolded complaint, I'm surprised. Roustabout didn't realize that it would be nice to support the team by coming out to the O&W game until the coach asked us to? We've only been doing O&W games for, I don't know, a half-century or more. It shouldn't take the coaches or players asking for us to want to attend.

Conditional fandom, like conditional love, is oxymoronic.

The only quitting I saw was some of the receivers gave up on their routes. It seemed like they either ran out of steam or just gave up on the route but it resulted in a lot of overthrown passes.
