So what to expect the next two games? Or the future.

7-5 at best

We lose to Florida, Georgia, Bama, LSU

Butch craps the bed on one of the other games

We start a new QB

Questions at RB behind Kelly

Our secondary will be bad

Our defense needs to improve

Probably right on the losses.

Probably a poorly managed QB controversy.

RB will be OK barring injuries... but injuries will come.

What secondary? UT probably needs to just line up with all DE's and hope that the other team doesn't catch it.

Seriously, Shoop will probably improve the D but not enough to overcome Jones.

Oh, a couple to add. UT will again lead the league in 2-deep players lost to injury and be bottom 3 in attrition.

But many here will STILL insist that Jones isn't responsible for any of it.

Mizzou offense = 1-Sr, 3-Jr, 3-So, 4-Fr UT = 1-SR, 7-Jr, 1-So, 2-Fr
Mizzou Defense = 3-Sr, 5-Jr, 2-So. UT = 3-Sr, 3-Jr, 4-So, 1-Fr
Vandy Defense = 2-Sr, 9-Jrs.
Vandy Offense = 3-Sr, 4-Jr, 3-So, 1-Fr

Vandy started the season with 12 starting lettermen, Tennessee 18
We have lost 3, but add McKenzie, Tuttle, and O'Brien

So what? The Vandy game won't be a cake walk. If we win, coaching will be a factor. Playing Kongbo, Osborne, Warrior, and Jumper....I think coaches deserve a little slack. This is Shoop's first year and his depth chart has been decimated. if they finish 9-3 and beat Florida and Georgia, I'm good with VOLS given schedule and injuries.

I expect us to beat Vandy and then score 45 points in whatever bowl we play, as has been the trend lately.

As for next year, compete for the east with the same Head Coach we have now.

I have news for you. The qb will be a drop off and knopw way will we beat UGA and UF both in back to back years. We have beat UGA 2 in a row so expect that game to go back. We don't beat Bama. That's 3 right there. USC will be better and we will be worse. We will be lucky to be 9-3 next year. This was our year. We should have beat USC and Txam.

You're giving Florida and Georgia too much credit. Florida will lose all their great defensive players this year. They still have no offense. And they have recruited worse than us the last 3 years. I believe they fall off big time next year. A 7-5 season wouldn't surprise me.

Georgia will be the pick to win the East next year. People will fall for the Eason and Kirby hype. They have to come to Neyland and those games are always close. I think we edge then out at home.

Another one of these...

You honestly expect Tennessee to pickup where Dobbs left off with a guy who's only live action is against inferior teams or mop up duty?

The D is still a mess and losing Barnett will hurt.

At this point without any staff changes 6-2 is a pipe dream
Butch Jones proved he's not the guy you want when a title is on the line.

Alabama and LSU are both losses
Florida: at the swamp with an inexperienced QB it's doubtful Tennessee wins
Georgia: its helps that its at Neyland but again I think they'll be the better team if Tennessee doesent make changes.
SC: until Butch beats Muschamp I'm chalking this up as a loss.
U.K., Vandy, and Missouri Tennessee should win.

I don't expect the offense to be as great next year as it was this year. But I do expect it to be good. Guarantano will be a solid starter. As good as Dobbs was his second year. The o-line will improve slightly.

However I see the biggest jump on defense. With decent health I expect to be much better next year.

The biggest reason I'm going 10-2 is I expect to not be gutted by injuries again. Low expectations should help ease the pressure from the team in the off-season. And I don't think our opponents in the East are that good going forward. Florida is losing everyone of their great defensive players. They have not recruited better than us the last 3 years. And the offense is still terrible. Georgia will be the pick to win the East. I just don't think Kirby and Eason are that good. I think they choke against us in Neyland like we chocked at the Swamp two years ago.

Shoop has been at UT less than one year. He is coaching players that he did not recruit or develop and who are not ideal for the system he wants to run. On top of that, his best players have almost all been lost to injury for all or part of the season. Some of which can be attributed to S&C.

Shoop DOES deserve some slack.

Jones.... does not. This year has revealed the weakness of Jones' recruiting at OL, CB, and LB. His stubbornness "stayed the course" on S&C even after Lawson got in trouble. His management of the team and the attitudes within it certainly contributed to the early lack of focus and struggles.

One example, practice reports in August frequently mentioned Hurd and a few others granting themselves days off for health. Though not injured, Hurd spent most of August in a green jersey even when he decided he was going to practice.

Granting players entitlement.... even star players... is never a good idea.

This year...meh, miss Atlanta and play an overated Big 10 team in another crap bowl.

Next year--the excuse train will be in full motion--we are young. QB has no experience. We have no depth. Injuries. etc

So the same "above average" fan who declared Dobbs passing issues fixed among other things that simply weren't true.... is now handing the job to Guarantano?

How about we let that play out?

Why would you expect that? UT's injury rate has been excessively high for 3 years running. When the Jones/Lawson S&C started kicking in.... UT started losing players to injury more than other programs. When Jones had to replace Lawson.... he promoted one of his understudies.

So why precisely should we NOT expect "doing the same things" to produce the "same results"?

Florida is losing everyone of their great defensive players. They have not recruited better than us the last 3 years. And the offense is still terrible.
Not really. UF has depth on D and doesn't have half of their two deep getting injured every season. Their offense has made modest improvements and will be helped by an influx of talent.

Georgia will be the pick to win the East.
As they should be. After a slow start, UGA has now climbed to 4th in total D in the SEC only 14 ypg behind LSU. They have talent and will continue to accumulate more.
I just don't think Kirby and Eason are that good. I think they choke against us in Neyland like we chocked at the Swamp two years ago.

Yeah... and you said Dobbs was better than Kelly.

I don't like either of those guys. But Smart seems to have a pretty solid plan and Eason easily has one of the strongest arms in CFB, good accuracy, and a quick release. Once the game slows down for him, he's going to be difficult to defend.

But excuses allow fans to avoid the obvious- that they're tolerating mediocrity.

The cycle is funny though whether player or coach. Some of the same people declaring Hurd a football god and mocking the notion that his best position might not be RB.... are now hating on him, calling him a cancer, questioning his talent/ability, et al. Jancek was defended.... until fired. Same with Bajakian.

Some of these same folks were berating us who thought Kiffin was a snake that could do damage to the program.... then calling him the devil once he proved us right.

If Jones is ever fired or leaves.... it is going to be fun watching his defenders flip to inquisition mode.

Just like they did with Dooley.

Can't find a Dooley fan these days.

They all knew he was bad.

I think Dooley under different circumstances wouldn't have been as bad as he was. He inherited a train wreck just like Jones did but was nowhere near up to the task of fixing it.

I am not sure he didn't hire better coaches except for Sunseri.

I dug through the archives and found posts that were stating the EXACT same excuses we hear today for Coach Butch Jones and the BSIA and flaming anyone who dared question the all powerful Coach Derek Dooley and his minions.

PS--I thought no coach had ever inherited a dumpster fire/mess like CBJ did.

Well since the future was included in the OP I guess I will pose this question here. I'm not usually for a 2 quarterback system let me say that right up front. But, I kind of think with the QB situation we will have next year it could be a good thing if used properly. QD is mobile but no Dobbs and JG is supposedly the next coming but will be raw. Also, we got Byrd, Jennings and Berry we can use in the wildcat. Not to mention the new guys coming in. We seem to be pretty loaded on offense. Will Debord be imaginative enough to utilize all this talent or will we be screaming "why the hell isn't such and such getting any snaps?" I'm thinking next year is the perfect year for using 2 QBs and some really imaginative offense from some of the other very talented guys. If the defense doesn't improve we will need to score 45 a game probably. Just pondering.

We should win the next 2 games. No excuses. Next season I expect a 10-2 season and berth in the SEC Championship (assuming we stay relatively healthy).

For comparison's sake I expected us to go 15-0/14-1 this year with a SEC and national championship. Obviously that didn't happen whether it was due to injuries or us not being good enough. Assuming we can stay relatively healthy next year, we should have enough talent on the roster to be able to beat Florida and Georgia along with our other eastern rivals. We have Alabama and LSU on the schedule. I am marking those down as losses. I'm assuming 6-2 should be good enough to win the East. Once in Atlanta, I won't expect to win it. But I will expect us to be able to compete with whoever comes out of the West.

Expecting more than a berth in the SEC Championship game next year will be a bit too much.

We will struggle to beat Vandy, most likely will lose our bowl game and next year will win no more than 8 games (including bowl game).

How can you possibly conclude that we will most likely lose out bowl game when you dont even know who we are playing?

The last two bowl games suggest otherwise. It would be statements like this that would make it difficult to consider anything you say. You are being negative just for the sake of being negative.

Champions of Life this season.

Princes of the Universe as proclaimed by Jones next season.

7-5 or 8-4 next season. Same cast and crew on the O line protecting a QB who gets very little coaching is never a good thing for an offense. And, no offense to Kelly, but I don't see him replacing Kamara and Hurd's production.

Defense will be better because it can't possibly be any worse. They don't have anyone that seems ready to step into Barnett or Sutton's shoes though.

A lot of production walking off the field for good after the bowl game.

I think Tennessee beats Vandy and backs into a higher tier bowl than they deserve. Butch will unload with all kinds of cliches that are meant to be back handed comments about/to the fan base.

Bowl worst case: they will face a much better team in said bowl and get blown out.

Bowl best case: they draw an overrated team like they have the last two years. And just like the last two years they come out fired up to prove something and blow out said overrated team. This will result in the fan base convincing themselves next years team goes 12-0 regular season only to see that blown up in the first month of the season.

In the future I expect more mediocrity and cliches as long as Butch Jones is the coach.
10-3 is mediocre, incredible.

Get blown out by Vandy. Get blown out in a crappy bowl game. Then Butch and most of his staff gets fired. Then its back to hoping we win 6 games a year. VN goes into full blown, sissy, liberal crybaby mode. Oh wait, many on VN are already there.
