Yes, any coach an recruit the good players. UT could hire me and I could recruit them. Signing them is the trick.

Ok. So the best recruiters get the Mannings to sign, and the Berry's, and so forth? So what's the trick?

One of your examples is pretty easy.

Eli went to Ole Miss because of Cut and Peyton's experience at UT under him. It was also familiar because of Archie but far enough removed from his time and success there that the pressure would have been less than following Peyton at UT.

Other non affiliated (legacy types) look for many different things. Some more important than others. For the elite kids I would say the top 3 or 4 would include: the ability to further their career as a pro, chance to win and play at the highest levels, personal connections with coaches (specifically position coaches) and other "perks" that were listed above. The order can change with each kid with each one being different.

It depends on the program.

With an historically solid program, a new coach gets a honeymoon recruiting period. The new coach can promise early playing time, a chance to be a part of a rebuilt, etc. He has options.

I think Kirby Smart is definitely riding this right now. Time will tell if he can sustain recruiting like this. Hugh Freeze came out of the gate strong and has faded. CBJ may be fading as well. It sure looks like he is.

Read Dobbs letter, he talks about his recruitment. He cites the coaches coming to visit him the night before an official visit and them really getting to know his parents, the engineering program at UT, the history of UT especially at the QB position, and the beauty of the campus and East TN in general.

UT recruiters have a lot to offer players and they have to get to know these kids to find out what they need to emphasize. For example let's say you have 2 kids you're recruiting, one is a WR and the most popular kid at school. The other is an offensive guard that is kind of shy and is always a team first guy. Which one do you think Butch will show up at the high school of before a big game, maybe have a school wide announcement over the intercom for him to come to the office to see Butch Jones? Now which one do you think you would just send a position coach out to see during a game where he doesn't show up in UT gear and only talks to the kid after meeting the coaches and the other guys on his team?

The only solution is to re-do recruiting rankings so that there are 1000 5-star players to go along with the 1000 coaches recruiting them. I think that would fix all this who can recruit & who can't BS talk every year.

Wow. I still think developing player is important. Which UT hasn't done yet.
