I am totally ignorant about all the rules, can someone tell me what happens to guys who don’t get offered a transfer portal position? Do they no longer have an available scholarship from there previous school ? Would UT take back someone ?

Has Amari Evans found a place to go? Cade Phillips? Both of those guys would be welcome back in my opinion

If happens more often than you think.

lots of them just end up at a mid major. Lucky to make even a fraction of the NIL they expected. Many of them wind up in Division II and lower. Some are lucky enough to go back to their old team, two have came back to us already after all.

I’d happily take Evans and Phillips back, both have a lot of potential to grow, but the thing is I don’t know if our depth chart really suits them anymore. If wouldn’t surprise me if Evans goes to a mid major to get playing time, because it’s unlikely that he will get much here next season.

They may have to take a pay cut to continue playing at that point. You rarely hear about bad deals, which suggests to me that the agents are the ones leaking the monster NIL deals.

Nico is really the only person I remember having to take a worse deal, probably because he drew so much negative attention to himself.

Like to see Evans back as a Vol.

The portal closes next week, but you don't need to have a commitment at that time. Unfortunately, some players will be looking into the summer. There is still a lot of uncertainty out in the portal world....

I think its possible we backfill with depth pieces from among our players who didn't find a landing spot at the price they were told they could command

The Fallout for College Athletes Not Recruited Through the Transfer Portal

For athletes who enter the NCAA transfer portal and aren’t recruited by a comparable program, their future paths can differ drastically. One common outcome is transferring to a lower competition level, such as NCAA Division II, Division III, NAIA, or junior college (JUCO).
However, some athletes find themselves without an athletic home. In these cases, they may lose their scholarship entirely and face the prospect of funding their education independently if they wish to remain at their original school or transfer as a student.
The risks are particularly high for college basketball players. Once they enter the portal, their current school is no longer obligated to retain them on the team or scholarship. Many programs quickly recruit replacements, leaving unchosen players without a team or financial aid.
In rare cases, a player may return to their original school, but this is increasingly uncommon. Without a suitable offer, some may see their careers end prematurely, while a few might explore professional or overseas options.

There is still the same number of schools (major and mid-major) and they will require the same number of players. When the major schools fill their teams, it will logically flow down to the mid major schools.
Either the mid-major fills their roster with HS or left over portal. But again, it still requires the same number of players, they would just have to move down a level.

I would think the mid-major would take a player from a larger school from the portal as opposed to a HS, if for the same price.
But there would be some from the portal that don't find a home, but I would guess not many. But I'm just guessing.

Do smaller schools also have NIL available for all their team??

They'll find a spot, loads of schools have positions to fill due to the large number of portal entries and it's early in the process. However, once they enter the portal, we have no obligation to honor their original scholarship, but we can bring them back if both parties agree.

My understanding is, Evans left over his NIL deal. He's not likely to change his mind

Revenue sharing began July 1, 2025 – this is also the starting date requiring submission of third-party NIL payments to the College Sports Commission for approval. Consequently, many collectives fully distributed their funds prior to July 1 to avoid having to submit these payments to the CSC for approval. Consequently, due to this “money dump” 2025-26 may represent a high-water mark for roster funding via NIL and 2026-27 roster costs could be lower

Many smaller schools do not have the funds for revenue sharing and maybe a few players might get a legit NIL deal. Like appearing in an ad for a local business for a few dollars.

Why would we welcome them back when we’re replacing them with better and they chose to seek greener pastures?
Exactly! If you had a GF who all of a sudden decided to leave you but you can be in a committed relationship for a year with a cuter girl...who we taking?!

I wish that they could collect damages from agents for pushing them into bad choices.
Agents don't prevent a player and/or his family from using the brain the good Lord gave them. It's not like the agents hold a gun to their heads and forces them into the portal. It's just that all parties involved ignore the situation and the long term only to see dollar signs. Greed is what got them in this spot not the agent. Remember, the agent only gets a percentage of the deal. No deal, no commission. Sure, it's no skin off his nose if a player doesn't get their bag, but it doesn't do their professional reputation a lot of good to have clients left being hung out to dry like most of these players will be. Deep down I'm sure players and families see all these big numbers flying and think they will get theirs just by entering into the portal. Agents, families and players all bear a degree of responsibility IMO.

Teenagers and unsophisticated advisors (handlers) are relying on the advice of the professional representatives. But no doubt the agents are covering their back sides by getting player signatures on their agreements with them. Which is why I said that I wish damages COULD be collected. It would solve a lot but won’t happen.
